Bed mattresses : Futon - Economize on space

The Futon mattress originated in Japan, where it was traditionally placed over a tatami floor mat. Traditional Japanese families air their futons in sunlight every morning and fold and store them away during the day. This accomplishes a double purpose: first, it allows the tatami mat to breathe, and secondly, it makes space in the otherwise surface reduced Japanese living accommodations. In Japan, one can see people beating their futons wildly each morning, using a specially designed bamboo tool to this end that looks somewhat like the Western obsolete carpet beater.

A traditional Japanese futon mattress is about two inches (5 centimeters) thick and is manufactured in an array of attractive and colorful fabric exteriors. It is generally stuffed with cotton. In the West, the futon has evolved from its ancestral Japanese origins. Westerners prefer to place their futon mattress on a wooden frame that can open into a bed or be folded back into a couch. Western manufacturers of futon mattress models have instilled the use of several layers of foam to fill in the futon mattress, making it much thicker and heavier than the original Japanese futon, as well as more difficult to carry, beat, air in sunlight and put away.

The Western version of the futon mattress is a creative and inexpensive alternative to bedroom and living room furniture, making it popular amongst students, young people or individuals, living in humble one room abodes that resemble a living room during the day and convert into a bedroom at night time.
