Bed mattresses : Shopping for a crib mattress firmness

A crib mattress is a firm mattress above a broad support base where a baby can sleep and roll comfortably. The firmness of a crib mattress is fundamental and has proven effective in lowering the incidence of SIDS, i.e. the sudden and unexplained death of a reasonably healthy infant from one month to one year old. The general term for this type of phenomenon is called crib death in the USA and cot death in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

It is widely acknowledged that a firm crib mattress and putting a baby to sleep on its back has sharply diminished the incidence of SIDS. This complies with the general axiom that back sleepers should use very firm mattresses and it applies for babies too.

But of course for each theory, there are a number of antitheses on the subject. Some claim that babies lying on their backs can choke on fluids and milk which they bring up. Others claim that babies lying face down could inhale their exhaled air (high in carbon dioxide) or choke themselves to death in their bedding.

To avoid sudden unexplainable crib deaths, it is highly recommended to use an extra firm crib mattress with tight fitting sheets and remove all stuffed animals, bumper pads and pillows or any bedding where the child can get entangled. Likewise, one should not place blankets above the babies' head to avoid choking.

A crib mattress should be kept immaculately clean as bed bugs feeding on baby vomit could be hazardous to the infant's life and health.
