Bed mattresses : The mattress during Medieval and Renaissance times

A mattress is a place that one longs to return to when one is stuck in traffic at night, or trapped in the company of boring people at a party or when Murphy's laws just seem to have taken over one's day and one regrets having gotten up from one's cozy and comfortable mattress that morning.

Of course, not everyone enjoys a mattress that is comfortable and cozy. It depends on the time when you happen to populate the planet and whether you are affluent or not. The ancient Germans, for example, lay on beds of leaves covered with animal skins or in chests filled with dried leaves and moss. They probably felt the humidity in their lungs and sneezed a lot. Later, when they got a little more sophisticated, towards the 13th century, they decorated their bedsteads with inlaid wood but the mattress itself remained quite primitive. The French added a number of pillows to raise the mattress to a sloping position, probably hoping to enhance the blood circulation in their lower limbs.

Louis the fourteenth had a collection of 413 sumptuous beds in his numerous palaces. Some were embroidered with pearls and silver and golden ornaments. The great Versailles bed where the King slept with Marie Antoinette is known to have crimson velvet curtains embroidered with the 'Triumph of Venus' in gold leaf. The King's mattress was stuffed with feathers.

During the eighteenth century, it was common for Kings and members of the elite hierarchy to recline on their mattress in parliament, while princes were seen seated and high officials remained standing. King Louis XI received lords and ambassadors, while lying on his mattress as a token of honor. Women received friends on their mattress, either prior or following childbirth.
