Bed mattresses : Your Child's First Bed: The Twin Mattress

Your child's first bed will probably be a twin mattress. The traditional size of this single mattress is 39'' x 75''. Do not be surprised if you find advertisements of barely used twin mattress and box spring for give away or sale at a very low cost on listings or at the local store. That low price really is the genuine price of that bed. Children's single beds are not that costly. Make sure that it is firm, clean, has the warranty to go along with it, and that there are no stains or shoe marks on the bed from enthusiastic children using the twin mattress as a trampoline.

Ask the salesperson if a washable twin mattress pad is included as part of the deal. Check the box spring carefully, make sure that it is well made and that it can support the weight of you, your child and possibly mum and dad all sitting on the bed at the same time. Encourage your child to try the twin mattress out and pretend to be sleeping.

It is important to comparison shop with your child and let your child help to decide which twin mattress is the most comfortable for him or her. It is a good time to speak to your child about safety and that the bed is not a new gymnastics launch pad. Make sure that the new twin mattress that you and your child choose is both firm and comfortable.
