Will Rules the Weekend, but Overall Box Office Not that Super
Hancock lived up to expectations, but it was the only film in the top five that did so. This lead to an overall box office of just $160 million over the weekend, which was 8% lower than last weekend and 14% lower than the same weekend last year. This is the first time in a month that 2008 hasn't kept pace with 2007, and year-to-date 2008 has again fallen behind 2007 $4.81 billion to $4.84 billion. There's a strong case for mitigating circumstances, however, as July 4th landed on the Friday and Independence Day is not a holiday that is normally associated with strong box office numbers and 2008 could regain its lead, if The Dark Knight proves to be as big of a hit as some expect it to be.

DVD Releases for July 8, 2008
Another week without a first-run release that deserves serious consideration for the DVD Pick of the Week award. This means we are left looking at special edition, limited releases, and TV on DVD sets for the best of the week. Sadly there are not a lot of contender here either. Batman Begins on Blu-ray Standard Edition or Limited Edition is certainly worth picking up, but it is mostly just a port of the HD DVD release and I was hoping for more (like having the extras in High Definition). The Monk / Psych two-pack offers two great shows for a reasonable price, but I'm not sure it's award-worthy. The best this week has to ogger is Stargate Atlantis - season Four - Buy from Amazon, and it is this week's DVD Pick of the Week.

Review: Hancock
What a great premise: a superhero who drinks, curses and actually costs a city in property damage.
