Live to RememberFilm Reviews: Determinedly old-fashioned if watchable, Russian WWII-set drama "Live to Remember" unspools the tale of a wife trying to help her husband hide out near their village after he's gone AWOL from the front. Veteran helmer and co-writer Alexander Proshkin, whose work is known better locally than offshore, elicts sturdy perfs from a cast of name (at least in Russia) thesps, but pic still plays like upmarket made-for drama. "Live" is likely to be enjoyed but not remembered with any great passion at home. Variety.com Tuesday, July 08, 2008 The Gene GenerationFilm Reviews: The future sucks yet again in sci-fi actioner "The Gene Generation." The feature debut for writer-helmer Pearry Reginald Teo, who attracted some fan notice with prior shorts, stars Bai Ling as a kick-fighting professional assassin pulled into intrigue involving DNA manipulation technologies run amuck. Variety.com Tuesday, July 08, 2008 The Third Part of the World (La troisieme partie du monde)Film Reviews: Bizarre celestial happenings haunt a classic case of the lovesick blues in "The Third Part of the World," a mildly intriguing sci-fi-logical drama from first-timer Eric Forestier. Part Ingmar Bergman, part Stephen Hawking, the tale stars actress Clemence Poesy ("In Bruges") as a lonesome realtor whose guy troubles take on quasar-sized proportions when lovers begin mysteriously vanishing into thin air. Variety.com Tuesday, July 08, 2008 2nd Verse: The Rebirth of PoetryFilm Reviews: Though comparatively rough-hewn, "2nd Verse: The Rebirth of Poetry" is an inspirational crowdpleaser in the mode of docs like "Spellbound" and "Mad Hot Ballroom," similarly tracing precociously skilled young protags through a competitive event. In this case, it's the annual Brave New Voices Poetry Slam, a San Francisco event that in 2005 (the year recorded here) attracted some 350 teenage poets from 36 U.S. cities, plus a smattering of international participants. Variety.com Tuesday, July 08, 2008 The Reflecting PoolFilm Reviews: The 9/11 truth movement might believe it has found its "JFK" in "The Reflecting Pool," despite the cold, hard fact that the latter pic is criminally pedantic when not dramatically absurd. "Based on the best available research to date," or so it claims, this unexplosive tale of an L.A.-based journo (played by writer-director Jarek Kupsc) feebly reiterates oft-blogged assertions of U.S. government complicity in the 2001 terrorist attacks. Variety.com Tuesday, July 08, 2008 Me Two (La Personne aux deux personnes)Film Reviews: Take "Stranger Than Fiction's" Will Ferrell and replace him with an even more pathetically obsessive accountant, then take Emma Thompson's omniscient author and replace her with a washed-up '80s pop star, and you'll get a vague idea of the concept behind French comedy "Me Two." Variety.com Tuesday, July 08, 2008 The Juche IdeaFilm Reviews: The evidence that current filmmaking is brimming with original, standard-breaking creations has to include the work of Jim Finn, whose brilliant "The Juche Idea" is the latest in a growing filmography without precedent or category. In line with his previous sneaky pastiches of totalitarian thought and action, "Juche" is an outrageously funny study of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il's theories on moviemaking. Variety.com Tuesday, July 08, 2008 The Dark KnightDaring and uncompromisingly different from previous incarnations of Batman--both the movies and the comics--Christopher Nolan and his amazing cast haven't redefined the superhero genre as much as created an unforgettable piece of crime fiction within the context of that realm. Comingsoon.net Tuesday, July 08, 2008 The Incredible Hulk"The Incredible Hulk" is a vast and noticeable improvement over Ang Lee's movie--at times on par with the first "Spider-Man" movie--but some of the original movie's problems are replaced by new ones, but none that completely ruin the enjoyment every time the Hulk comes out to "SMASH!!!" Comingsoon.net Tuesday, July 08, 2008 The Sari SoldiersFilm Reviews: One of several recent docus that give credence to the old feminist saw that if women were given power, they would speedily put an end to war.
