Racial disparities seen in U.S. breast cancer care
By Will DunhamWASHINGTON (Reuters) - Doctors are less likely to give black women radiation therapy after surgery to remove early-stage breast cancer than white women, researchers said on Wednesday, adding to evidence of racial disparities in U.S. medicine. The 37,305 women 65 and older examined in the study had undergone a procedure called a lumpectomy in which doctors removed just the tumor and spared the breast, a procedure less radical than a mastectomy, which removes the entire breast.

IntroductionEstrogen receptor alpha (ER-alpha) and progesterone receptor (PgR) are consolidated predictors of response to hormonal therapy (HT). In contrast, little information is available regarding the role of estrogen receptor beta (ER-beta) in various breast cancer risk-groups treated with different therapeutic regimens. In particular, there are no data concerning ER-beta distribution within the novel molecular breast cancer subtypes, luminal A (LA) and B (LB), HER2 (HS) and triple negative (TN).
Methods:
We conducted an observational prospective study evaluating, by immunohistochemistry, ER-beta expression in 936 breast cancers. Associations with conventional bio-pathological factors and with molecular subtypes were analyzed by multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), while classification and regression tree (C&RT) analysis and univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were applied to determine the impact of ER-beta expression on disease free survival in the 728 patients

This study addressed the gene expression profile of oestrogen responsive genes also susceptible to modulation by oxidative stress [1]. There is a comprehensive set of 62 core genes from cultured oestrogen- and oestrogen receptor-deprived epithelial breast cancer cells responsive to three forms of oxidant stress. Evidence is presented that oxidative stress may contribute to the development of an aggressive subset of primary oestrogen receptor positive breast cancers. The current study is a first look into the possible association between oxidative stress, loss of oestrogen receptor function and progesterone receptor expression as well as specific breast cancer phenotypes with a poor prognosis.
