A new article in the recent issue of The Quarterly review of Biology provides good evidence that allergies are much more than just an annoying immune malfunction. They may protect against certain types of cancer. The article, by scientists Paul Sherman, Erica Holland and Janet Shellman Sherman from Cornell University, suggests that allergy symptoms may protect against cancer by expelling foreign particles, some of which may be carcinogenic or carry absorbed carcinogens, from the organs most likely to come in with contact them. In addition, allergies may serve as early warning devices that let people know when there are substances in the air that should be avoided........

Giving children with milk allergies increasingly higher doses of milk over time may ease, and even help them completely overcome, their allergic reactions, according to the results of a study led by the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and conducted jointly with Duke University.

So advise researchers from several European countries following a huge international study. A major international study shows that the frequency of non-infectious rhinitis in children varies considerably among regions of the world. The project, which monitored some 54,000 children from 22 countries, also shows that only a small proportion of such rhinitis cases are caused by allergy.

Alvine Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today announced proof of concept in a Phase 1 Trial of ALV003, an oral protease therapy in development to detoxify gluten, intended for use by patients with celiac disease. The trial results confirmed that single doses of up to 1,800 mg of ALV003 were safe and tolerable in healthy volunteers. Doses at the 300 mg level achieved up to a 96% reduction of gluten in a meal in the stomach at 30 minutes, and were well tolerated by patients with celiac disease.

Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, causes cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, congestion, sneezing and sinus pressure. But unlike a common cold, which is caused by a virus, hay fever is an allergic response to indoor or outdoor airborne allergens, such as pollen, dust mites or pet dander. Some individuals have hay fever year-round. Others have episodes of hay fever at certain times of the year, usually in the spring, summer or fall.
