Drug-eluting stents reduced the risk of revascularization, heart attack and death in diabetics as compared with bare-metal stents in the largest observational comparison, researchers reported at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2008. The results from The Drug-eluting and Bare Metal Stenting in patients with diabetes Mellitus: Results from the Mass-DAC Registry, were presented as a late-breaking clinical trial.

A successful diabetes UK African and Caribbean Healthy Living Day was held on 29 October at Churchend and Roundwood Unity Centre, Harlesden. 80 people attended and 20 people received a diabetes test. The Mayor of Brent, Councillor Ralph Fox, opened the event. The event took place as part of Black History month, a celebration of Black history and culture, and was a great opportunity for people in the area to find out more about diabetes and its complications.

Diabetes UK is calling on all enthusiastic swimmers to take part in a fundraising relay race across the English Channel in 2009. Last August, two teams of six spirited swimmers tackled the English Channel in a relay race and raised £20,000 for diabetes UK. The swimmers took it in turns to swim for an hour between Dover and Cap Gris Nez in France, taking an average of 15 hours all together.
