People With Psychiatric Disorder May Succeed In 2nd Suicide
People who have attempted suicide at some point in their lives are more likely to actually succeed in committing suicide at a later date. The risk is particularly high for people with serious psychiatric disorder, according to a new study from the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet.
One in ten suicide attempters actually commit suicide later on in life. However, knowledge of the factors affecting the risk of suicide is limited, which makes it hard to identify, and help, the people who are at the greatest risk.

For the first four months of the current fiscal year, which began July 1, expenditures for Community Support totaled $183 million. Over the same period last year, July-October 2007, Community Support expenditures surpassed $355 million.

Schwabe, the manufacturer of the Ginkgo extract EGb 761 , believes that the GEM study results do not allow a final conclusion on the potential of the extract in dementia prevention.
GEM is one of five studies that have been or are investigating the effect of standardized Ginkgo extract on the prevention of dementia. The GEM study investigated the probability of developing dementia in 3069 subjects (average age on entry 79 years) receiving either 240 mg EGb 761 or placebo daily. Over the 6-year treatment period, compliance fell to only 60%.
