Glaxo rejected Maryland doctor's Avandia warning: report
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- GlaxoSmithKline rejected a warning from a Maryland doctor in 2000 that its Avandia drug was linked to congestive heart failure, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing the internist involved. The report also said the Food and Drug Administration was "unresponsive." A Glaxo spokeswoman told the paper the doctor's claim was unsubstantiated and acknowledged the firm asked the doctor's hospital not to publicize their view. The U.S. Senate is probing Glaxo in relation to whether the firm pressures a Duke University researcher, and the Justice Department also is probing Glaxo's marketing.

AstraZeneca has brought a patent infringement case against Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd and the company said this continues, with the court case due to commence on 12 January 2009. With FDA approval of the generic drug, Teva has the option to launch "at risk" without waiting for the resolution of the patent case.
