E.U. extends antitrust probe into Teva, Barr Pharma deal
BRUSSELS (MarketWatch) -- The European Commission Tuesday extended its antitrust probe into the proposed takeover of Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. (BRL) by Israel-based generic drugs manufacturer Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (TEVA) by 10 working days due to commitments offered by Teva.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc., a subsidiary of Mylan Inc. , said Tuesday it has settled with Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp, Novartis Corp. and Novartis International AG over Letrozole drug, a generic form of Novartis' Femara. Under the agreement, the generic form of Novartis' breast-cancer treatment will be licensed for marketing, Pittsburgh-based Mylan said. Additional terms were confidential, the company said. Letrozole had U.S. sales of about $470 million for the 12 months ending Sept. 30. Shares of Mylan closed Monday at $8.85, down about 6%.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Walgreens said Tuesday its november sales at stores open at least one year fell 0.9%, and front-end same-store sales also fell 0.9%. Total sales rose 3.7% to $4.96 billion, the drugstore operator said. Black Friday and the following weekend saw stronger consumer traffic than a year ago, Walgreens said, but fewer items were purchased per transaction. Transactions on a same-store basis rose 1.7% in november. Pharmacy sales increased 2.4% in the month, while same-pharmacy sales slipped 0.9%, hurt by 2.3 percentage points due to generic drug introductions in the last 12 months.
