senior vice president and head of group function strategy at Ericsson, effective 1 October. Gilstrap brings to Ericsson more than fifteen years of experience in the global telecommunications and IT industry. Gilstrap began his career in the telecommunications and IT industry in 1991, when he joined Sita, a data network cooperative serving the airline industry. He was appointed CFO, then COO to Equant Network Services, a spin-off of Sita. In 2000, he was named CEO of Radianz, where he led a team responsible for creating, building, and managing the financial extranet. Later, Gilstrap was strategic advisor for Cable & Wireless for three years, where he worked on turnaround issues which included UK development and acquisition activities.
dmeurope.com Tuesday, August 11, 2009Nokia to replace Symbian with Maemo - report(Telecompaper) Nokia plans to deploy the Maemo OS software for future smartphones, replacing Symbian, according to the Financial Times Deutschland, citing sources close to the company. Maemo was developed for use in Nokia's Internet Tablets, is licence free and the first Maemo-based smartphone will be launched within a couple of weeks. Nokia did not want to comment on the rumours. Nokia acquired Symbian in 2008 for EUR 264 million and moved the Symbian software into the Symbian Foundation in April this year.

As part of the contract, all FriendFeed employees will join Facebook and FriendFeed's four founders will hold senior roles on Facebook's engineering and product teams. Bret Taylor and Paul Buchheit founded FriendFeed along with Jim Norris and Sanjeev Singh in October 2007 after which all four played key roles at Google for products like Gmail and Google Maps. FriendFeed is based in Mountain View, California and has twelve employees. FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally, as the teams determine the long term plans for the product. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Of the total number of Ovi Mail accounts, over 650,000 accounts were created on Nokia devices. The top Ovi Mail markets in terms of the number of users include India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia and South Africa. Free to set up straight out of the box, Ovi Mail comes with spam filters to block unwanted emails and is accessible from a broad range of Nokia devices. Ovi Mail, which can be used directly from Nokia mobile phones as well as on the web, is available in more than 180 countries and supports 20 languages.
dmeurope.com Tuesday, August 11, 2009Globalive Wireless adopts Wind brand name(Telecompaper) Canadian company Globalive Wireless is adopting the brand name Wind, already used by its shareholder Orascom Telecom in Europe. The company, which won 3G licences in the 2008 spectrum auction, announced plans to imemdiately hire 300 staff for the customer service of its new mobile service, as well as take on up to 2,000 more people within the next 12 months. Wind will be Canada's fourth major mobile operator and will cover all the territories except for Quebec. Globalive Wireless is building its network in five Canadian cities and has said it will offer mobile services late this year or early 2010. Orascom Telecom holds a 65 percent stake in Globalive with the Canadian company's CEO, Anthony Lacavera, owning the remainder. Orascom already uses the Wind brand name in Italy and Greece.

Australian IT Tuesday, August 11, 2009MTS revenues down 23% to USD 2 bln in Q2(Telecompaper) Russian and CIS mobile operator MTS saw its revenues fall by 23 percent year-on-year to USD 2.022 billion in Q2, due mainly to depreciation in the ruble. OIBDA was down 29 percent from the year-ago period to USD 954 million, and the OIBDA margin declined to 47.2 percent from 51.2 percent in the year-earlier period. Net income decreased by 15 percent year-on-year to USD 563 million. MTS's total subscriber base increased by 3 percent to 99.51 million, compared to 96.61 million in Q1 2009. MTS Russia saw its revenues increase by 7 percent year-on-year to RUB 51.02 billion, while OIBDA was down 3 percent to RUB 23.76 billion. The margin improved to 32.2 percent from 23.6 percent in the year-ago period. ARPU rose by 5 percent sequentially to RUB 245, while MOU increased to 215 from 205 in Q1 2009.
