Australian IT Thursday, August 13, 2009Telstra warns for challenging financial year(Telecompaper) Telstra has said it faces a challenging year and expects low single-digit revenue growth and low single-digit EBITDA growth in the 2010 financial year. Net profit for the 2009 financial year was AUD 4.1 billion, up 10.3 percent from AUD 3.7 billion in the previous financial year, and the company generated free cash flow of AUD 4.4 billion, a 13 percent increase on the prior year. Telstra declared a dividend of AUD 0.28 per share for the year. Revenues went up 2.7 percent to AUD 25.5 billion from AUD 24.8 billion, and EBITDA went up 5.1 percent to AUD 11 billion, meeting guidance. Telstra ended the period with 9.02 million fixed access lines in service, down 3.7 percent year-on-year. The company further had 2.27 million retail broadband subscribers, up less than 1 percent, and 698,000 ULL customers. Telstra's mobile subscriber base went up 9.2 percent to 10.19 million, of which 6.33 are 3G subscribers and 1.05 million are mobile broadband customers.

To restore communications, the company is renting bandwidth from other telecommunications providers, the Taipei Times reports. Most telephone services have resumed, but voice services to China, Singapore, the Philippines, and Hong Kong are still 'patchy'. Chunghwa will dispatch repair ships as soon as possible.

Silicon Thursday, August 13, 20093 Group pushes back breakeven target(Telecompaper) The 3 Group reduced its operating loss (LBIT) to HKD 1.81 billion in the first half, from HKD 5.27 billion a year earlier. The decline was helped by a change in accounting policy to book customer acquisition costs when incurred, rather than amortise the spending over the life of a customer contract. 3 Italia also saw an end to amortisation on its operating licence after it was made indefinite. The mobile operator posted revenues down 18 percent to HKD 26.38 billion, but up 3 percent in local currency. EBITDA before all customer acquisitions costs was down 34 percent to HKD 8.07 billion, hurt by exchange rate effects and forex gains in the year earlier period. Excluding these effects, the figure was up 10 percent year-on-year. Customers acquisition costs were down 17 percent to HKD 7.89 billion. The customer base rose 27 percent from the end of 2008, due mainly to the merger of 3 Australia with Vodafone Australia. The 3 Group had a total 22.770 million customers as of 12

Silicon Thursday, August 13, 2009T-Systems to cut 3,000 jobs in 2009, 2010(Telecompaper) T-Systems has reached an agreement with its works council about further personnel reductions, up to 3,000 through the end of 2010. After this reduction, all T-Systems employees receive a job guarantee until the middle of 2012. The company and works council will focus on voluntary redundancies, offering support to find a new job within T-Systems or at another company, as well an early retirement program or a retirement program for civil servants. The civil servants working at T-Systems are eligible for support to find a new job within the civil service. At the end of this year, T-Systems will examine if these voluntary programs have reached their goals, and redundant employees who are without a solution then will be moved into a so-called transfer company managed by Deutsche Telekom's personal service provider Vivento. The employees will lose their T-Systems contract and will be supported by Vivento in their search for a new job. The German union Verdi calls the agreement
