Australian IT Friday, August 14, 2009Alibaba's profits slip 26% on increased investments(Telecompaper) China-based internet marketplace services provider Alibaba.com saw its revenues rise 21 percent in second quarter to CNY 1.72 billion, from CNY 1.42 billion a year earlier, driven by growth of paying members. However, profits fell 26 percent to CNY 514.1 million from CNY 697.2 million in Q2 2008, and earnings per diluted share fell 24 percent to HKD 0.1151. The decrease was a result of the company's ongoing investments in customers, people and technology innovation to expand its market position and to position Alibaba for future growth. Alibaba ended June with a total of 42.78 million registered users, up 32 percent, of which 33.32 million were in China and 9.46 million were international users. The number of storefronts rose 46 percent to 5.51 million and the number of paying members stood at 531,471, up by 44 percent. Developers can submit applications in five categories such as connect, entertain, guide, save time, and enhance living, which highlights the wide range of activities, information, entertainment and other cool things developers can bring to mobile phones. Verizon encourages developers who have been creating apps for other platforms such as Java, Brew, Android, Windows Mobile and others to enter the Apply Your Ideas contest. Applications must be new to the BlackBerry wireless platform and work on BlackBerry Storm smartphones to be eligible to win. Members of the Verizon developer community will choose the category winners and the people's choice winner from among the applications submitted. Revenues from advertising reached BRL 98.3 million, up 42 percent versus the same quarter last year, mainly due to the increase in advertising revenues, revenues from products launched during the past two years and revenues from recent acquisitions. Subscription revenues reached BRL 129.7 million in the quarter, up 2 percent over the same period in 2008. EBITDA totalled BRL 33.6 million in the second quarter, down 5 percent versus a year ago, while the EBITDA margin dropped 5 percentage points to 20 percent at end-June. Last month Groupe Aeroplan UK, which owns and manages the Nectar customer loyalty programme, extended an IT infrastructure outsourcing contract with Savvis - its supplier of eight years. Silicon Friday, August 14, 2009Chinese operators to invest CNY 450 bln in 3G in 3 years(Telecompaper) The three state-owned Chinese mobile operators, which were granted 3G licences in January, proposed to make CNY 450 billion investments in 3G services in the next two-and-a-half to three years, Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Yizhong said at a press conference in Beijing. Li stressed that each operator needs to develop at least 50 million 3G users, and try its best to reach 80 million in the next three years. With three 3G operators, the regulator expects to reach 240 million 3G users in three years, a target which is higher than the government's previous goal of 150 million in three years made in February. Analysts said the 240 million users target is much more aggressive and questioned how the government would achieve this. An analyst at Daiwa Institute of Research Marvin Lo said that according to the research firm's previous forecast, 3G penetration will reach 16 percent in 2012, based on a projection of a total number of mobile users of 938 million
dmeurope.com Friday, August 14, 2009Net launches 20, 60 Mbps packages, tests VoD service(Telecompaper) During the ABTA 2009 event in Sao Paulo, Brazilian cable operator Net unveiled the launch of the Net Virtua 5G package, which provides broadband access speeds of 20 Mbps or 60 Mbps. Customers taking the Net Combo HD Max package, currently with 12 Mbps access, will be offered the higher broadband speeds, with existing subscribers receiving the higher speeds at no extra charge. The higher speeds are available in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The operator has also started trials of a VoD service, to be offered jointly with the Net Combo HD Max package. Initially, clients will receive the Multishow, Sportv, GNT, National Geographic and BBC channels.
