China Mobile opens mobile app store(Telecompaper) China Mobile has officially opened its mobile application store, Mobile Market. The application store is an open platform for all mobile software developers and China Mobile offers developers 70 percent of revenues from each application sold, the South China Morning Post reports. The applications are compatible with six major brands: Nokia, Samsung, LG, Dopod, Lenovo, and Dell. Mobile Market has six types of applications on offer: games, wallpapers, music, video, and e-books, and prices range from free to CNY 15. To promote the service, China Mobile is providing a free trial to users, waiving mobile internet fees.

Australian IT Tuesday, August 18, 2009Qualcomm becomes minority shareholder in Pantech(Telecompaper) Mobile handset manufacturer Pantech has entered into a debt-to-equity conversion agreement with Qualcomm. The debt-to-equity conversion is part of a restructuring of Pantech's outstanding debt into equity with many of its creditors. Under the terms of the agreement, Qualcomm will
become a minority shareholder in Pantech and Curitel Communications. Qualcomm will hold no more than 15 percent of the outstanding common shares of each company and will be a passive investor with no participation on the board or management of the companies. The transactions will take place in stages over a number of months.

computer maker Dell. A spokeswoman for China Mobile told the Wall Street Journal that Dell will supply a handset called the mini3i that will support applications from China Mobile's just-launched online store. A Dell spokesman said the company is supporting China Mobile to create "a more personalised internet experience". He didn't provide details about the phone's availability, price or features. The Chinese operator's Mobile Market currently supports 10 handset models, including devices from Nokia, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, HTC's Dopod and Dell. The app store is expected to hel pdrive demand for new 3G services.
dmeurope.com Tuesday, August 18, 2009Three-quarters of viewers prefer HDTV over SDTV - study(Telecompaper) Given a choice between watching a programme in SD or HD, 77 percent of viewers prefer HD and 76 percent find HD quality better, according to French broadcast transmission services group TDF's latest digital TV barometer. HD significantly increases the amount of time spent on a channel. While zapping, viewers are 12.5 percent more likely to pick something in HD and to watch it for 25 percent more time. Using parameters such as heart rate, attention and posture, the study finds a higher emotional quality for HD, with 64 percent of respondents saying the format heightens emotions. On the other hand, HD also has an appeasing quality. Electrodermal testing to measure stress showed a 15 percent decrease when watching HDTV. The research also found that HDTV shows seem to be 35 percent shorter, supporting the adage that "time flies when you're having fun". The new on-device application store offers a mix of free personal and business applications. Customers can download the BlackBerry App World application to their BlackBerry smartphone by accessing the BlackBerry web page or Wap portal. The BlackBerry App World is currently available in English or Spanish, with a Portuguese version of the client interface scheduled for launch later this year. BlackBerry App World in Latin America currently features a broad range of free applications. Paid applications are expected to be available for Latin American users at a later date.

The funding will be used for research on the enhanced version of LTE, LTE Advanced. In Europe, LTE trials are curently under way in Finland, Germany, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the UK. The technology is expected to
become commercially available in Sweden and Norway in the first half of 2010. In September 2009, the EC will roll out negotiations on the details with project consortia, including the flagship Artist4G that builds on the achievements of the Winner projects and unites 4G industry and researchers from Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the UK. The new projects are scheduled for launch in January 2010.
