EBITDA fell 3.5 percent to USD 1.1 billion, and net income was also down, at USD 184 million from USD 276 million a year ago. The sharp decline was mainly due to unrealised foreign exchange losses and hedge losses in Pakistan for a total of approximately USD 65 million. The regional Arab mobile operator said total subscribers exceeded 84 million at end-June, an increase of 8.7 percent compared with more than 80 million at the end of March. This was driven by customer growth in Egypt (31%), Bangladesh (17%) and Tunisia (13%). ARPU was USD 6.0 in the second quarter, compared to USD 5.8 in the first quarter. CEO Naguib Sawiris said the first half was characterised by a weak first quarter followed by a stronger Q2, but warned that the economic environment is still challenging and the company

Silicon Wednesday, August 26, 2009Is constant Facebooking, Twittering, IMing taking its toll on attention spans?According to a new study released by a group of Stanford University researchers Tuesday, people who regularly deal with several streams of electronic information simultaneously do not pay attention, control their memory, or switch from one job to another any better than those who prefer to complete one task at a time. Actually, they fare much worse. The study, whose findings are published in the 24 August edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, involved about 100 students being put through three tests. Australian IT Wednesday, August 26, 2009Three parties in talks to buy Tele Columbus - report(Telecompaper) At least three interested parties are involved in talks to acquire troubled German cable network operator Tele Columbus, part of the Orion Cable holding company, reports the Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) citing unnamed sources. The interested parties are believed to include German fixed-network operator Versatel, German cable network operator Kabel Deutschland (KDG) and US financial investor Blackstone. The acquisition of Tele Columbus would allow DSL provider Versatel to enter the cable TV market. With a hybrid network consisting of DSL connections and the around 2 million homes connected to the Tele Columbus network, Versatel would have a fixed network to rival those of Vodafone and United Internet. Tele Columbus is troubled by almost EUR 1 billion of debt. FTD sources indicate that the interested parties are only willing to pay around EUR 450 million for Tele Columbus, a sum considered way too low by its owners and banks.
