Seven Network to build Wimax network in Perth
(Telecompaper) Australian television network Seven Network plans to build a Wimax network in the city of Perth. Seven has established a new subsidiary called Vividwireless and appointed former executive director of marketing for Telstra's consumer business, Martin Mercer, as chief executive officer. Following a tender, the company has picked Huawei Technologies as its network equipment supplier, and has asked wireless broadband provider Unwired, another Seven group company, to build and operate the network. Vividwireless plans to begin offering services in March 2010. The company is launching in Perth because it is a rapidly growing market with strong economic fundamentals, as well as being a market currently under-served by broadband infrastructure. Vividwireless's local staff in Perth will provide call centre and other services to look after the local customer requirements.

YouTube in talks with studios on movie rentals - report
(Telecompaper) YouTube is in talks with leading film studios on introducing a movie rental service streamed from its site, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. Rental fees could provide the loss-making company, which at present relies on advertising, with an important new revenue stream. YouTube is in discussions with Lions Gate Entertainment, Sony Pictures, MGM and Warner Brothers about introducing some of their new titles to the site, the paper's sources said. In some cases, these titles might be available on the site on the same day that they come out on DVD. Some titles may also be offered free with advertising. New movie rentals are expected to cost around USD 3.00, similar to Apple's iTunes store. A YouTube spokesman said the company is always working to expand on "its great relationships with movie studios and on the selection and types of videos we offer our community". According to the paper, YouTube is pressing studios to allow the movies to be stream
