The communications minister Stephen Conroy announced fundamental reforms to existing telecommunications regulations. The reforms seek to address Telstra's high level of integration, streamline and simplify the competition regime, and to remove regulatory red-tape. The government seeks to structurally separate Telstra on a voluntary and cooperative basis but will impose a strong functional separation framework on the carrier if it chooses not to cooperate. Telstra responded the regulatory reform package with disappointment but said it is willing to discuss options around separation.

The phone offers a 'carousel-style' menu with one-click access to popular social networking applications. The phone is also customised to offer SingTel users a complete social experience on the move with instant access to AMPed, SingTel's social music service, IM on Mobile and inSing.com, SingTel's information portal. The INQ Mini 3G will be available from 19 September.
dmeurope.com Tuesday, September 15, 2009Digicel acquires Orange Dominica(Telecompaper) Caribbean mobile operator Digicel has completed the acquisition of Orange Dominica, a wholly-owned subsidiary of France Telecom. According to Digicel spokeswoman Antonia Graham, the operator will switch Orange Dominica's customers to its own network over the next several days. No financial details on the transaction have been revealed. Digicel launched operations on the Dominican market in 2006, following the acquisition of US operator Cingular Wireless' Caribbean operations. Following the acquisition of Orange Dominica by Digicel, the Caribbean island will be served by two mobile operators, namely Digicel and Cable&Wireless (Lime).

Unlike Firefox's similar third-party extensions, not enough people were installing Skype Extras, Skype said in an email and in a blog post to developers.
Silicon Tuesday, September 15, 2009Optima Telekom launches IPTV service(Telecompaper) Croatian provider of fixed telephony services Optima Telekom has launched a digital television service named OptiTV. Available with five different triple-play packages which also include Opti Telefon fixed telephony and OptiDSL or OptiCarnet broadband internet services, OptiTV includes 70 TV programmes, free access to the Snimalica DVR service for three months, and the ability to view recorded programmes for a period of 15 days. The triple-play packages range from HRK 231.87 to HRK 292.36 per month. Additional features include a TV content filter for programmes which are not suitable for young viewers and Croatian subtitles for a number of channels. After the end of the first three months of the contract, the DVR service is available for HRK 10.07 for ten hours and HRK 30.26 for 30 hours of content. Optional programming include the HBO Package, Cinemax Package and HBO+ Cinemax Package, for HRK 56.58, HRK 36.90 and HRK 67.65, respectively.

Silicon Tuesday, September 15, 2009MetroPCS picks Ericsson, Samsung for LTE launch(Telecompaper) US mobile operator MetroPCS announced supply contracts for its planned roll-out of LTE network technology. Ericsson will provide the network infrastructure for the launch, while Samsung will provide the first LTE handset for the operator. MetroPCS plans to launch LTE services in the second half of 2010, with a dual-mode CDMA/LTE phone available late next year.

The new service will provide businesses with a converged solution for their telecoms requirements spanning mobile, fixed line, data, broadband communications, equipment and professional consultancy. O2 UK's Business Sales Director, Ben Dowd, said the move into the fixed-line market would allow O2 to provide business customers with an end-to-end service and has been developed in direct response to feedback from customers. BT Wholesale will provide O2 with the fixed-line element for the new communications service under a five-year managed services agreement. O2 will offer its own-branded broadband, fixed-line phone and connectivity services, providing all end-user contact services and end-user billing.
