Australian IT Wednesday, September 16, 2009Datacom agrees tower-sharing deal with Aircel(Telecompaper) Datacom Solutions has signed a tower-sharing contract with Indian mobile operator Aircel. The contract, worth about USD 400 million, will help Datacom to roll out mobile services across the country. Datacom will gain access to a minimum of 5,000 mobile masts over the next sixteen months. Aircel, which is controlled by Malaysian mobile operator Maxis, has reportedly been searching for a buyer for its mobile infrastructure assets and has received a number of bids. Datacom is one of the recently licensed mobile operators in India, controlled by the local consumer electronics group Videocon.
dmeurope.com Wednesday, September 16, 2009Era launches HSPA+(Telecompaper) Polish mobile operator Era is launching HSPA+ technology, with the faster data service available under the operator's Blueconnect tariff from 18 September. The service offers download speeds of up to 21 Mbps and uploads at 5.7Mbps. HSPA+ will initially launch in Lodz, Cracow, Szczecin, Tychy, Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot, Bydgosc, Torun and Olsztyn. The network in Warsaw, Wroclaw and Poznan will be upgraded in 2010. In other areas, the operator is gradually rolling out HSDPA at speeds of 7.2, 10.4 and 14.4 Mbps. Era, which is controlled by T-Mobile, will offer the Huawei E1820 USB modem for the service, with its Blueconnect data plans. Ericsson supplied the network equipment.

Silicon Wednesday, September 16, 2009TP reshuffles management(Telecompaper) Polish operator Telekomunikacja Polska (TP) has made changes to its management board. TP appointed vice president and chief marketing and strategy officer Vincent Lobry to the TP management board. He replaces Richard Shearer, who was responsible for the Mass Market division at TP and resigned from the board due to personal reasons. Piotr Muszynski, former member of the board, has also been appointed vice president of TP in charge of operations and will now be responsible for IT, network and wholesale services at TP. Grazyna Piotrowska-Oliwa, the current president of PTK Centertel, has decided to resign from the TP Group. At the same time, he received a new offer from France Telecom Group, which will be considered until 31 October. Mariusz Gace replaces Piotrowska-Oliwa in the management board of PTK Centertel as CEO and president and resigned from the board of TP to cover this position. Gace was also named the executive director of TP Group's sales and customer service.
dmeurope.com Wednesday, September 16, 2009KPN becomes third-largest digital TV provider in Netherlands(Telecompaper) The number of Dutch digital TV connections grew by 5.9 percent or 245,800 net additions during the second quarter, to a total 4.426 million on 30 June, according to Telecompaper's quarterly Dutch Television Subscribers report. As the total number of TV connections decreased by 0.2 percent during the quarter to 7.96 million, digital TV increased its share of the entire TV market to 55.6 percent. Telecompaper expects the digital TV market to grow by an average 5 percent per quarter during the remainder of 2009. The increased digital TV penetration as well as the economic downturn will cause quarterly growth to slow from an average 5.6 percent in 2008. The market researcher forecast the number of digital TV connections to reach the 5 million mark during the first quarter of 2010.
