Korean regulator allows iPhone
(Telecompaper) The Korea Communications Commission will allow Apple's iPhone to be sold in South Korea, the Wall Street Journal reports. The regulator used to protect the local mobile handset market with strict rules but has recently began relaxing the rules and now allows devices such as the BlackBerry and iPhone on the market. One of the stumbling blocks for the iPhone was its in-built mapping capabilities as rules require providers to use local technology for location-based services. The KCC has made the iPhone exempt from this rule. Carrier KT has been in talks with Apple about selling the iPhone. A spokesperson confirmed that the talks were still ongoing and that KT intends to start selling the handsets as soon as possible.

Irex introduces eReader device
(Telecompaper) Electronic paper display technology provider Irex Technologies has introduced its Irex DR800SG, a touch-screen eReader that offers multi-mode 3G wireless capabilities. The Irex device includes the Barnes & Noble eBookstore, giving users access to more than 750,000 titles, including new releases and bestsellers at USD 9.99. Barnes & Noble expects its eBookstore will increase to over 1 million titles within the next year, inclusive of every available eBook and eBook originals from book publishers. The 3G wireless connectivity for the Irex device is powered by Verizon Wireless' network. The Irex device also uses the Gobi multi-mode 3G embedded module which contains Qualcomm's mobile broadband technology for connectivity to 3G networks around the world. Vodafone updates internet portal services with Vodafone 360
(Telecompaper) Vodafone unveiled an overhaul of its internet portal services, under the name Vodafone 360. The main element of the new service is called Vodafone People, a connected address book. Vodafone People automatically syncs all contacts from a customer's phone, Facebook, Windows Live Messenger and Google Talk profiles, and will soon also include Twitter, Hyves and studiVZ. Customers will be able to organise and share the contact and messaging information, as well as share music, photos and their location information with friends. The service is automatically backed up and synchronised, regularly and wirelessly, between the mobile and PC or Mac. All contact updates, e-mails, photos and conversation history or settings changes made either at home or when on the move are saved. In addition to Vodafoen People, Vodafone promised a "wide range of apps, games, music and mapping services" for Vodafone 360. Numericable ultra high-speed customers up 28.3% in 6 months
(Telecompaper) French cable operator Numericable increased its number of ultra high-speed customers by 28.3 percent to 195,000 in September from 152,000 in March. Overall internet customers rose by 3.7 percent to 1.04 million (vs 1 million), phone subscribers rose by 1.8 percent to 753,000 (vs 740,000), TV subscribers were unchanged at 3.5 million, and subscribers to the 'Service Unique Numerique' (SUN) social triple-play offer rose by 54 percent to 215,000 from 141,000. The number of homes passed by FTTx was unchanged at 3.2 million. Speaking at a press conference, CEO Pierre Danon, said Numericable would "accelerate in mobiles in 2010". The company will do so either via its current status as an MVNO on Bouygues Telecom's network, or as an MVNO of a new consortium it may join to bid for the fourth mobile licence. Danon said he was in active discussions with many parties about a potential candidacy for the fourth licence, and has until 29 October to bid or not.
