Sina's acquisition of Focus Media falls through(Telecompaper) The acquisition agreement between Chinese online media and mobile VAS company Sina and Focus Media has fallen through. In December 2008, the companies agreed that Sina would acquire substantially all of the assets of Focus Media's digital out-of-home advertising networks. The agreement was set to expire if approval from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce was not received by 30 September 2009. Although Sina still believes that the acquisition can provide strong synergies to its
online advertising platform, the delayed consummation of the transaction has negatively impacted the business operations of both sides. The companies have decided to continue strategic cooperation.

The internal affairs ministry plans to set up the task force as early as next month to look at past policies, such as the privatisation of NTT, and regulatory reforms in the telecommunications sector. A possible reorganisation of NTT will be looked at as well.

Following the EC decision, consumers will benefit from new default settings on personal music players set at safe exposure levels, as well as clear warnings on the adverse effects of excessive exposure to high sound levels. EU rules currently establish no maximum sound limit, nor do they require any specific labelling related to volume levels. The existing regulations only require that a statement be put in the instruction manual to warn of the adverse effects of exposure to excessive sound levels. The Commission's proposal covers all personal music players and mobile phones with a music playing function.
