Polish regulator abandons TP split
(Telecompaper) Polish telecommunications regulator UKE will likely abandon its agreement to divide dominant operator Telekomunikacja Polska (TP) as it reached an agreement with TP, Reuters writes citing the UKE's chief Anna Strezynska. The UKE president said at a news conference that the regulator expects to suspend the procedure for a year in the autumn. She added that UKE will also drop its plans to split TP by the end of the next year if the situation in 2010 remains as good as it is now. TP welcomed the UKE's move and stressed there is no need to split the company and hand over control of the wholesale arm to the regulator because it had improved its relations with the other operators. TP has been in talks with the regulator and alternative operators on improving access to its network and market competition. The France telecom subsidiary had earlier warned that its profitability could be damaged from the regulatory intervention.
