Chunghwa reports typhoon damage to undersea cables
(Telecompaper) Taiwan's Chunghwa telecom has reported that six undersea cables were damaged during typhoon Morakot. To restore communications, the company is renting bandwidth from other telecommunications providers, the Taipei Times reports. Most telephone services have resumed, but voice services to China, Singapore, the Philippines, and Hong Kong are still 'patchy'. Chunghwa will dispatch repair ships as soon as possible.

Telstra warns for challenging financial year
(Telecompaper) Telstra has said it faces a challenging year and expects low single-digit revenue growth and low single-digit EBITDA growth in the 2010 financial year. Net profit for the 2009 financial year was AUD 4.1 billion, up 10.3 percent from AUD 3.7 billion in the previous financial year, and the company generated free cash flow of AUD 4.4 billion, a 13 percent increase on the prior year. Telstra declared a dividend of AUD 0.28 per share for the year. Revenues went up 2.7 percent to AUD 25.5 billion from AUD 24.8 billion, and EBITDA went up 5.1 percent to AUD 11 billion, meeting guidance. Telstra ended the period with 9.02 million fixed access lines in service, down 3.7 percent year-on-year. The company further had 2.27 million retail broadband subscribers, up less than 1 percent, and 698,000 ULL customers. Telstra's mobile subscriber base went up 9.2 percent to 10.19 million, of which 6.33 are 3G subscribers and 1.05 million are mobile broadband customers.
