Young stellar objects: The source of gas emission around Herbig Ae/Be stars
(Astronomy & Astrophysics) This week, Astronomy & Astrophysics is publishing new high-resolution observations of the gas component surrounding six young stars with the AMBER/VLTI instrument. Astronomers were able to measure the spatial distribution of the hydrogen and CO gas emission in the inner disks around six Herbig Ae/Be stars. They found that the gas emission can clearly trace the infall of matter onto the star or the ejection of gas from the system.

Astronomers get best view yet of infant stars at feeding time
(ESO) Astronomers have used ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer to conduct the first high resolution survey that combines spectroscopy and interferometry on intermediate-mass infant stars. They obtained a very precise view of the processes acting in the discs that feed stars as they form. These mechanisms include material infalling onto the star as well as gas being ejected, probably as a wind from the disc.

A new explosive
(Wiley-Blackwell) A research team led by David E. Chavez at Los Alamos National Laboratory has now developed a novel tetranitrate ester, which is solid at room temperature, is a highly powerful explosive, and can be melt-cast into the desired shape.

PhysTEC addressing physics teacher shortage
(American Physical Society) US schools are struggling with severe shortages of physics teachers. The Physics Teacher Education Coalition is spearheading an effort to meet the demand for qualified science educators by tripling the output of K-12 physics teachers at more than a dozen colleges and universities.
