The Blazers' Steve Blake, replaced as the team's starting point guard by Andre Miller, showed the kind of impact he can make off the bench in Thursday's preseason game at Utah. Maynor 'coming along fine' for Jazz
With a slight frame and a jump shot that still needs some work, Jazz rookie guard Eric Maynor isn't likely to strike fear into his NBA opponents just yet. But the first-round draft pick from Virginia Commonwealth is making progress. He had 14 points and five assists in 23 minutes off the bench to help the Jazz beat the Trail Blazers 99-96 in a preseason game Thursday night. "He doesn't look like he's strong enough to hold down his breakfast," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said of Maynor. "He's got a little more toughness than what he looks at times. He looks to get people the basketball and shot the ball pretty well tonight. He's coming along fine."

Beasley seems to have better grasp
Heat F Michael Beasley, the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2008, had 11 points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes Thursday against the Hornets. He's trying to make the conversion from power to small forward and put behind him a monthlong stint at a drug rehabilitation center in the offseason. The 20-year-old came into the preseason in better shape than a year ago and seems to have a better grasp on the NBA game. He shot 5 of 11 and had three assists -- along with a few defensive mistakes in the post -- after scoring 24 points in 38 minutes against Oklahoma City on Wednesday.
