Topix.net Sunday, November 08, 2009Strikeforce Challengers Jorge Gurgel vs. Billy Evangelista ResultsLast night's installment of the Strikeforce Challengers
series on Showtime came to us all live from Fresno, California. In sum, it was a great night of fights for some up and comers, and featured an excellent main event battle between Jorge Gurgel and Billy Evangelista. Strikeforce Challengers Results Zoila Frausto vs. Elisha Helsper: Helsper was the stronger and bigger fighter. That said, she waited until the third round before she began looking for takedowns, and by then Frausto, a longtime Tae Kwon Do practitioner, had accumulated
points with a roundhouse kick to the face that opened a cut under her opponent's left eye, some nice jabs, and timely knees in the clinch. And that was all she needed for victory. Zoila Frausto defeats Elisha Helsper by way of a unanimous
decision. Read more...Strikeforce Challengers Jorge Gurgel vs. Billy Evangelista Results originally appeared on About.com Martial Arts on Saturday, November 7th, 2009 at 09:43:24.Permalink | Comment | Email this
New York Times Sunday, November 08, 2009Strikeforce Waiting Patiently On Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers ResultsFedor Emelianenko vs Brett Rogers Results Talk about risk. Imagine you're Strikeforce right now. You've signed Fedor Emelianenko, the person most fans believe is the greatest heavyweight fighter in the world. But instead of pitting him against another superstar- something that Strikeforce doesn't really have in the heavyweight division right now- you've got him up against Brett Rogers. The problem with Brett Rogers isn't his fighting skills; the man certainly poses a big time challenge on his feet. It's that a fighter that you've invested a ton of money is about to take on a guy that isn't all that well known to casual fans. What if Emelianenko loses? What happens to his reputation? And consequently, what happens to Strikeforce? Make no mistake, Strikeforce is no Affliction; in other words, their entire livelihood is not caught up with Fedor exclusively. But an Emelianenko loss would not help publicity for his future events, which would be harmful considering he's their biggest signi
New York Times Sunday, November 08, 2009Brett Rogers Doesn't Plan On Losing To Fedor EmelianenkoMaybe you're wondering what's on Brett Rogers' mind as the days countdown to his November 7 Strikeforce meeting with Fedor Emelianenko. Well, let's put it this way- he's still not lacking any confidence. Along with this, he recently told Fanhouse, "I don't plan on losing any time soon." Translation: I'll defeat Fedor Emelianenko this weekend. And Rogers didn't stop there, either. He's not just planning on beating Emelianenko, he's planning on being impressive. "Once everybody sees what I do in the cage," he noted, "jaws are going to drop." The bottom line is that jaws will drop if Rogers wins. Looking forward to seeing if his prediction comes true. Topix.net Sunday, November 08, 2009Omigawa disagrees with upset of Hioki, Khalidov stuns Santiiago at ''Sengoku 11th Battle''Fans of mixed martial arts have become used to controversial decisions, so much so that every enthusiast knows you "can't let a fight go to the judges." It often seems that two judges awarding a split-
decision win may be the only two people in the building who have scored the bout in that manner, and the main event of Saturday's "Sengoku 11th ...
Topix.net Sunday, November 08, 2009Coolio Replaces DMX On Alabama Pride MMA Fight CardThis whole thing keeps getting stranger. According to SOHH.com, Coolio will replace DMX in the upcoming Alabama Pride mixed martial arts fight scheduled to take place on December 12 at Alabama's Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex. The bottom line is that DMX could not come to an agreement with the event's promoter. No one knew if DMX had any real MMA training before almost jumping into the cage here. Word is that Coolio has begun training. . . But hopefully this isn't the first time he's been involved in martial arts. Peculiar stuff.Coolio Replaces DMX On Alabama Pride MMA Fight Card originally appeared on About.com Martial Arts on Monday, November 9th, 2009 at 17:38:49.Permalink | Comment | Email this
About Sunday, November 08, 2009Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velazquez at UFC 108MMAWeekly.com is reporting that Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will take on Cain Velazquez at UFC 108. Three words: What a matchup! To date, Velazquez has demonstrated awesome cardio and wrestling. But Nogueira, a man that's extremely comfortable off of his back, will offer a much different problem for the up and coming UFC fighter. Namely, great submissions from the guard. Kongo had almost no chance of submitting Velazquez when they fought and everyone saw the result. The same thing with Ben Rothwell. In other words, we're either about to find out how good Velazquez's submission defense is or how good his striking skills are. In this fight, it's going to be pick your poison. Looking forward to it.Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velazquez at UFC 108 originally appeared on About.com Martial Arts on Monday, November 9th, 2009 at 17:23:51.Permalink | Comment | Email this
About Sunday, November 08, 2009Gegard Mousasi Wins By TKO Over Rameau Thierry SokoudjouSo far, so good for Strikeforce on CBS. This event started off in outstanding fashion with a war between Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Silva, and the hits just kept on coming with Gegard Mousasi and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in their next scheduled battle. Here's the skinny on what happened. Round 1: The two traded sporadic, but speedy shots early in the first round before Mousasi connected with a hard left-right combination. The strikes compelled Sokoudjou to shoot in for a takedown, which he achieved. After some mild ground and pound, Mousasi turned his adversary over. But while looking for a submission, Sokoudjou got up. He then executed a trip to perfection, ending up on top again. This eventually led to a standing guillotine attempt by Sokoudjou and hard knee afterwards. Mousasi then attempted a takedown of his own, only to have the tables turned on him due to his opponent's judo mastery. In the end, I gave Sokoudjou the round
because of the takedowns. Round 2: Mousasi lan
