China ends July with over 1 billion telephony users
(Telecompaper) The number of telephony users in China hit 1.03 billion at end-July, up by 48.99 million since January. The number of fixed-line users contracted by 12.42 million during the period to 328 million, the People's Daily Online reports citing statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The number of mobile users, however, went up by 61.41 million to 703 million, exceeding 700 million for the first time.

Italy antitrust agency extends probe to Google Inc
ROME (Reuters) - Italy's antitrust agency said on Friday it was broadening an investigation into whether Google's local news website coerced local newspapers into posting their stories, to cover the U.S. parent company Google Inc. The competition authority launched the probe after the Italian Federation of Newspaper Editors complained that any publication refusing to appear on the website was automatically excluded from Google's search engine.

Vodafone Germany quietly launches VDSL in Heilbronn
(Telecompaper) Vodafone Germany has started quietly marketing its VDSL services in Heilbronn from mid-August, according to a Vodafone spokesman at IFA talking to onlinekosten.de. The reason for the soft launch is that VDSL is a pilot project. The operator plans to market its VDSL service in its other project town Wurzburg within a few weeks. Vodafone also plans to re-launch IPTV service in the middle of 2010, after ending the former Arcor service in August of this year. A team of experts is currently developing new possibilities that will offer IPTV real added value, according to the spokesman.
