Borderline personality disorder grows as healthcare concern
Sufferers display mood instability, fear of abandonment, impulsive behavior, anger and suicidal or self-injurious acts. People with the disorder also may misperceive the actions of others. They have the thinnest skin, the shortest fuses and take the hardest knocks. In psychiatrists' offices, they have long been viewed as among the most challenging patients to treat.

Fitness fanatic or couch potato? Blame your DNA

H1N1 flu unlikely to recombine with seasonal flu
The swine flu grows quicker, so it probably won't exchange genetic material with more common flu viruses. A new study eases fears that the pandemic H1N1 influenza virus will recombine with seasonal flu to mutate into a more lethal form. The study, reported in the online journal PLoS Currents, shows that the pandemic virus, commonly known as swine flu, grows much faster than seasonal flu viruses and is thus less likely to exchange genetic material with them.

The highly allergic should keep an epinephrine shot close by
For some, a bee sting can be fatal, so learning to self-administer the injections -- and having one on hand when traveling -- can be a life saver. Every few weeks, I hand a prescription for an injection of epinephrine -- the world's most precious elixir during a major allergic attack -- to at least one allergic traveler. Say, to a person with extreme bee-sting reactions headed somewhere far away (think Serengeti plain, South American jungle or maybe just a big national park) that has plenty of venomous insects and few if any emergency rooms.
