Scuba diving in Kosrae, Micronesia
By Gil Zeimer, San Rafael I went because: Kosrae offers some of the world's best scuba diving with pristine reefs, 100-plus-foot visibility, 85-degree water and more than 200 species of coral. Don't miss: Attending a Sunday morning church service to meet the...

Capping the season in Capitola
The question was much too easy for the woman behind the counter: What really says summer? "Hmm. Maybe a mai tai," she said. I could see no flaw in her logic, so I kicked off my flip-flops and pulled up a stool. The view of Capitola from the back deck of the...

Phillips Hill has art on the wall, in the glass
In the small Mendocino County town of Philo, there's a Craftsman bungalow next to the post office. From the outside it just looks like a charming little cottage, maybe a second home for someone from the city. But inside is a whole other story - one of a...

A Maui habitue gets out of comfort zone, onto a bike
MAUI, Hawaii - I am a creature of habit. For 20 years, I have been making biennial two-week vacation trips to Maui, staying in the same unit at the same condo complex, following essentially the same daily routine: morning exercise, breakfast, beach, lunch, nap, beach, join the friendly crowd at the barbecue to cook dinner, watch a rented movie or read, bed.

In rustic Lanai, sights go by at 2 m.p.h.
LANAI, Hawaii - There are 30 miles of paved road on Lanai, and this isn't one of them. The landscape becomes gaunt and biblical as I approach the ancient Hawaiian fishing village of Kaunolo. The "road" - actually nothing but a long, dry, rocky gulch - gets rougher and rougher. The Jeep Wrangler lurches and bucks, and the toolbox rattles like a thunderstorm.

Kauai's Poipu: Not too much but just right
POIPU, Hawaii - Poipu is postcard-perfect Hawaii, guaranteed. Or as close to it as you can get in the real world.

Hotels for nestling into old Hawaii
KOHALA COAST, Hawaii - From my balcony (mine for two nights), I inhale the moist breath of the sea. The trade wind rustles the curtain and carries the heavy scent of sweet blossoms. Below, a gentle surf spreads white lace over the sun-warmed sand.
