NewScientist.com Wednesday, September 16, 2009Working as a team increases pain enduranceTeam players can tolerate twice as much pain as those who work alone, according to research that throws fresh light on some of the most wince-inducing feats in sporting history.Researchers at Oxford University found that members of its rowing team had a greater pain threshold after training together than when they performed the same exercises individually.Working as a group is thought to boost the rush of endorphins, a feel-good chemical that is
released in the brain and helps dampen down feelings of pain, the
scientists said. The effect might have played a part in an extraordinary FA Cup final between Manchester City and Birmingham in 1956. The City goalkeeper, Bert Trautmann, broke his neck after diving for the ball, but went on to make a series of crucial saves to help his team win the game 3-1.Writing in the Royal Society journal, Biology Letters, the researchers speculate that a similar surge of endorphins might underlie the feel-good sensations people experience when they dance to
Guardian Wednesday, September 16, 2009UTSA engineers win $350,000 in stimulus funds to develop synthetic root structures(University of Texas at San Antonio) Researchers at the University of Texas at San Antonio have received a $350,000 grant to develop a liquid plastic polymer to inject in roots. The liquid would solidify in the shape of the roots, creating a plastic mold to keep soil in place once the natural roots are gone. The research has applications to embankments, dams, landfills and other soil structures.
Eurekalert.org Wednesday, September 16, 2009First solid evidence for a rocky exoplanetThe longest set of HARPS measurements ever made has firmly established the nature of the smallest and fastest-orbiting exoplanet known, CoRoT-7b, revealing its mass as five times that of Earth's. Combined with CoRoT-7b's known radius, less than twice Earth's, this tells us that the exoplanet's density is quite similar to the Earth's, suggesting a solid, rocky world. The extensive dataset also reveals the presence of another so-
called super-Earth in this alien solar system.
