Verizon announces 4G Venture Forum
(Telecompaper) US carrier Verizon Wireless has introduced the 4G Venture Forum, an initiative which brings together financial investment, product incubation and market validation for products and services that will harness 4G wireless networks. The 4GVF is a collaboration of Verizon venture funds and Alcatel-Lucent Ventures, Charles River Partners, New Venture Partners, North Bridge Venture Partners, Norwest Venture Partners and Redpoint Ventures, to facilitate the identification and commercialisation of 4G related technologies. Both Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson, the primary network infrastructure providers for Verizon's upcoming LTE network, are also partners in the venture. This initiative further accelerates Verizon's approach encompassed by the Verizon Developer Community. Verizon, Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson will contribute expertise in building advanced wireless networks and provide programmatic input critical to concept success. Ciena in talks to buy Nortel Metro Ethernet unit
(Telecompaper) Ciena announced that it is in advanced discussions to acquire substantially all of the optical networking and carrier Ethernet assets of Nortel's Metro Ethernet Networks (MEN) business. Any agreements would be subject to a competitive bidding process as part of Nortel's bankruptcy process. Nortel tried to sell the MEN division last year, but was unable to complete the deal before it started its restructuring and Chapter 11 filing. Nortel confirmed the advanced negotiations with Ciena.
