Korean operators want regulator to drop pro-Wibro policy
(Telecompaper) Korean mobile operators want the communications regulator to drop its pro-WiBro policy as it is not a profitable service. Telecommunications experts and officials from the mobile operators want the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) to follow market rules rather than pushing operators to invest in WiBro, The Korea Times reports. Between 2006 and 2008, SK Telecom invested KRW 621.3 billion in WiBro infrastructure, missing its promise of KRW 664.4 billion. KT also invested less than it pledged. the company spent KRW 730 billion, below the promised KRW 796 billion. KT was supposed to expand WiBro to 84 cities by end-2008 but has so far expanded the network to 28 cities. The KCC is considering penalties for the carriers for missing their investment targets for WiBro. The government expected the WiBro market to reach KRW 8.1 trillion in 2010 with the domestic equipment market to hit KRW 5.8 trillion.
