Carphone Warehouse reports quarterly connections up 2.0%
(Telecompaper) Carphone Warehouse maintained its financial outlook and said it's on track to split its UK broadband and European distribution units by March 2010. In a trading update for the fiscal second quarter, the company said mobile connections at the distribution business Best Buy europe rose 2.0 percent year-on-year to 3.17 million in the 13 weeks to 3 October. The company said the handset market was "subdued", but growth was supported by increased market share in smartphones. The number of stores rose 1 percent to 2,459. Best Buy Europe is on track to open its first "Big Box" stores in Spring 2010, the company said. The UK unit TalkTalk added a net 77,000 new broadband customers to finish September with a total 2.930 million. That excludes Tiscali UK, which lost 62,000 customers in the period to end at 1.339 million. Carphone said the closing customer base at Tiscali was around 160,000 lower than first expected in the acquisition, which means it will receive money back on the p

Zon launches 1 Gbps broadband service
(Telecompaper) Portuguese cable network operator Zon Multimedia has commercially launched its broadband service with download speeds of 1 Gbps. Launched under the Zon Fibra brand, the service will initially be available only for residential customers. The Zon Fibra 1 Gbps provides unlimited internet traffic and will be offered as part of triple-play packages. The package will include access to the Funtastic TV service, along with a fixed voice plan with unlimited calls to Portugal and 20 countries in the world, as well as 100 MB for mobile broadband traffic. The service will be available for EUR 249.90 per month, plus a one-time equipment installation and activation fee of EUR 99. As a launch promotion, by year-end, users will be able to access the service with no equipment installation fee.
