LG to merge telecom units
(Telecompaper) LG plans to merge its three telecommunications units to strengthen service offerings, the JoongAng Daily reports. The units LG Telecom, LG Dacom and LG Powercom will hold board meetings on the merger plans shortly. Once the companies agree, LG will apply to the Korea Communications Commission for approval. It is likely that LG Telecom will absorb LG Dacom and Powercom as it is the biggest unit and has the best financial performance. the company hopes to complete the merger before the shareholders meeting in March 2010.

Cofetel develops regulation to boost MVNO activity
(Telecompaper) Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Commission (Cofetel) is currently developing new regulation to boost the entrance of MVNOs on the local market. According to Cofetel commissioner Jose Luis Peralta, the rules seek to simplify the MVNO authorization process and address issues such as number portability and customer service. According to Cofetel data, Mexico currently has around 76.5 million mobile phones. However, nearly 40 percent of households do not currently have a mobile phone connection, thus this sector would be a good target market for MVNOs.

Telefonica promises further dividend increase
(Telecompaper) Telefonica has reiterated its commitment to reach EUR 2.10 earnings per share in 2010. the company will also pay a dividend per share of EUR 1.40 for 2010, up by 21.7 percent year-on-year. This dividend will be payable in two tranches. Telefonica has also set a target to increase up to a minimum of EUR 1.75 per share the dividend for 2012. The company expects revenues to increase by 1-4 percent between 2008 and 2012, while OIBDA is estimated to rise by 2-4 percent in the period. Operating income is forecast to increase by 4-7 percent by 2012. The company provided the forecasts at its investor conference in Madrid.
