Reuters Friday, October 30, 2009Softbank's profit growth boosted by mobile unit(Telecompaper) Japanese communications provider Softbank saw its net income grow more than 70 percent as sales were boosted by the mobile unit. Net sales for the six months to September totalled JPY 1.35 billion, an increase of 1.5 percent from JPY 1.33 billion in the year-ago period. The growth was primarily due to sales growth at the mobile unit, which recorded subscriber growth and handset sales growth. Net sales at the e-commerce segment as well as the broadband segment were down. Operating income was JPY 230.62 billion, up 28.1 percent year-on-year. Net income grew 72.1 percent year-on-year to JPY 70.75 billion from JPY 41.12 billion a year earlier. For the full financial year ending 31 March 2010, Softbank forecasts operating income of JPY 420 billion.

CNET Friday, October 30, 2009Arcep confirms Iliad sole bidder for 3G licence(Telecompaper) French commmunications regulator Arcep said it received just one application for the country's fourth 3G licence, from broadband operator Iliad. Applications were due by 29 October. Arcep said it will go ahead with the evaluation process of the offer as planned. Various other parties dropped out of the running prior to the deadline, citing the high costs of network roll-out. France is offering 5MHz of 2100 MHz spectrum with the licence and requiring the winner to cover 25 percent of the population within two years. The minimum price for the licence is EUR 240 million. Arcep said earlier this week that if there is only one bidder for the licence, it could take a decision before Christmas on awarding the frequencies.

Samsung said it saw strong demand in developed markets for its touch-screen phones such as the Jet and Star, while developing markets benefitted from improved channel demand and holiday promotions in China.
