USATODAY Tuesday, August 04, 2009Australia detains terror suspectsAustralian police launched a major security operation last night, arresting four men accused of planning to stage a terrorist attack on a military establishment.The four Australian men of Somali and Lebanese descent were arrested after a series of pre-dawn raids on properties in the southern city of Melbourne.The group was said to be linked to an Islamic extremist group in Somalia, al-Shabaab, which is thought to have links to al-Qaida, and had been planning to use automatic weapons in their attack"The men's intention was to actually go into the army barracks and to kill as many soldiers as they could before they themselves were killed," said Australian federal police acting commissioner Tony Negus."This operation has disrupted an alleged terrorist attack that could have claimed many lives."The alleged target was said to be the Holsworthy barracks on Sydney's western outskirts, a major base for Australian special forces.The terrorist attack would have been the most serious on Australia
