Understanding Media Redux: Making Better Use of Space and Time Online

Last month I contrasted the wordle (a collage of words with size proportionate to frequency of use) of the contents of my personal profile and my friend Siona's, and commented on how hers seemed more reflective of me than mine did.As a second experiment, I produced the wordle above of the contents of a collection of five of my own poems, and below it the contents of my favourite poem, TS Eliot's Four Quartets. Many of the prominent words in these wordles are temporal or spacial. The word now features in both, and while Eliot's place is the sea, mine is the forest. If poetry is infatuated with time and space, I wondered why most poetry makes such poor use of both to ma

Intel Debuts Wireless Power

This could be huge but before we get too frothy about it we should take a breath and realize that not only will device makers have to build this into their hardware designs, and pay Intel for the privilege of doing so, but with a range of a couple of feet us consumers won’t be [...]

CRM Takes A Beating

Ouch. It is interesting that analysts are now criticizing the company for focusing too much on enterprise deployments when just a year ago that is exactly what the company said they were going to do. Meanwhile, sales and marketing expenses continue to take a huge bite out of the company’s income statement. The San Francisco-based [...]

Fair Use: 1, RIAA: 0

While I am pleased with this decision to allow a lawsuit against Universal to continue, we’re really not that much closer to achieving clarity about Fair Use in the 21st century. The saga of the copyright-infringing toddler continues as a California court refused to dismiss a lawsuit claiming that Universal Music had filed an [...]

3-D eCommerce Takes Tentative Steps Forward Through Virtual Malls

US News and World Report’s Matt Bandyk has a post describing how online shopping could herald a new, Wall-E-esque future of obese, screen-driven sloths. The site that spurred his idea is called VirtualEShopping.com. Their software enables users to enter a virtual mall via a digital meme, or "persona," which they steer it around a 3-D [...]

Voice of God No Longer in Style in Political Ads

Daniel Libit has a fantastic article in Politico (found through Patrick Ruffini) that reviews the trends in political ad voiceovers. John McCain's voice of choice comes from "Joan," whose last name must remain a "corporate secret." From the article: "One thing we like about this voice," said Bill Kenyon, Strategic Perception's political director, "is it doesn't [...]
