Om, That's Actually "You Gotta Be Fucking Kidding Me"

Om Malik discovered that Microsoft has received a new and exciting patent on "page up and page down."  It was issued on 8/19/08.  I just read the summary and this is truly a ridiculous patent.  The USPTO must have gotten confused by the fancy math included in the patent (e.g. "{[(p-1)/c]h}+r&q... that is included in claim 1. 1. In a computing environment, a method comprising: displaying at least one page of a document that has multiple pages, at least one of the multiple pages, and the displayed at least one page including a first page displayed beginning at a starting point offset from a top of the document and from a top of the first page; calculating a height of at least the first page; calculating a row offset of the starting point of the first page; calculating a vertical offset at the starting point of the first page, wherein the vertical offset is calculated according to a formula of the form {[(p-1)/c]h}+r, where p is equal to the number of

Do This. Now.

Just do this, now. Go here, and buy a copy of Life is a Verb. For these reasons:It will change your life. Seriously. It will show you (not tell you), through extraordinary true stories, how to live your life more intentionally. How to stop doing what's merely urgent and start doing what's really important, to you. How to become who you really are, and do what you were intended to do. It will empower you, not by telling you what to do, but by making you believe, passionately, that you can be better, can do more, can be more authentically yourself. And how to start. It's enormous fun. Patti is funny. Her stories (some about her own life, some those of people she knows) are more than instructional, they are entertaining. This book will make you laugh, cry, and do lots of other things you didn't think you would or could do. It will move you.It is extraordinarily well written. If you are a writer, and want to learn how to write well, this is your model. Every word in this book counts. There

Dean “Ultramarathon Man” Karnazes on Life, Marathons, etc.

Last week Dean "Ultramarathon Man" Karnazes spoke last week at Google about life, ultramarathons and his outrageous feat of running 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days. His first book was harrowing but inspirational fun, and his new book sounds equally interesting. As a semi-editorial aside, Karnazes' speaking may start somewhat clunky, but it gets better and more flowing as he goes along, so bear with it and just watch the video. It's great stuff. Btw, his resting heart rate is 38 bpm, and his body fat is 5%. Whoa!

Is Apple Planning Touch-screen Macs?

Many a wide-eyed fanboy would love for Apple [NASDAQ:AAPL] to release a touch-based tablet. Fortunately for them, the touch technology coming out of the company's iPhone team makes the possibility of a touch Mac more likely than ever. Now new patents are revealing that the Cupertino computer maker is at least considering the idea. The US patent application appears to cover a tablet-like computer, which seems to operate using the same multi-touch functionality that made the iPhone an international star. read more

AMD To Release Dual-Core Phenom Processors?

It may be true that processors are not the most exciting doohickeys in the consumer electronics world, but when AMD [NYSE:AMD] does anything, it's time to pay a little attention. That's because the processor world is home to one of the most unequal playing fields in the tech industry; with Intel [NASDAQ:INTC] head and shoulders above AMD and VIA [TPE:2388], any move by the underdogs bolsters hopes for a little more competition in the space. read more

Tensegrity's Jerome Rifkin Breaks Bones, Builds Business

Some entrepreneurs embody classic rags-to-riches tales. Medical device entrepreneur Jerome Rifkin offers that story a new twist: Injuries to innovation. His first injury occurred while he was cycling home from a University of Florida research lab. A personal injury attorney hit Rifkin in the chest with his Jeep, knocking him over and parking on his [...]

Adjustable Rate Mortgages Are Housing Crisis' Next Wave

NPR’s Morning Edition today commented on the fact that the mortgage crisis may just be warming up: There is growing concern that the home foreclosure crisis may worsen next year as lenders are hit by a new category of loans that haven’t caused much trouble. Bank analysts say they expect delinquency rates on so-called “option ARMs” [...]
