The Greatest American Hero is making comic books Filed under: OpEd, Celebrities, Reality-FreeIt seems that a guest-stint on Heroes isn't enough, William Katt must further prove himself by starting his own comic book company, Catastrophic Comics. Their debut comic, called Sparks, is being released today.
According to the press release, the series is set in 1948 and follows Ian Sparks, a masked vigilante who discovers the high price of being a hero. Sparks was co-created by William Katt and Christopher Folino, the writer/director of the cult comedy film "Gamers."
"My goal for Catastrophic Comics is to tell original stories, with amazing art work, that don't suck. And I can't imagine a better book to launch our company with than Sparks. JM and Chris have done a superb job with this gritty book," commented William Katt.
Between this and his upcoming TV appearance, it seems that Mr. Katt is milking his former television glory for all its worth. Not that I blame him. The Star Trek actors have been doing it for decades.Continue reading The TV Squad Thursday, June 19, 2008So You Think You Can Dance: Top 18 Perform Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, So You Think You Can Dance(S04E08) Two down and seventeen more to go until we find "America's Favorite Dancer" for the summer of 2008. Have you found your favorite yet? I'm narrowing it down, but it's a bit early yet to be picking favorites and there are still a ton of dancers left, as the lo-o-o-ong intro sequence showed us. Nigel and Mary were joined this week on the judge's panel by contemporary madwoman Mia Michaels (of the inspired "Tim Burton wedding" piece last week). And her hair was shockingly bleached very blonde.I think I prefer Michaels choreographing than judging. She focuses almost too much on her own interpretations of the emotions in the pieces rather than what the dancers had to bring. I think she's insane and brilliant in choreography, but maybe a bit too "out there" for really constructive criticism.Continue reading So You Think You Can Dance: Top 18 Perform Permalink&... this | |&... Britney and her Daddy left yesterday to be with Jamie for her delivery. Word on the street is Jamie Lynn and Casey want to name their baby girl "Cailynn or Cassie."
There's no doubting that the Spears are consistent with names. tvgasm.com Thursday, June 19, 2008Reality show casting calls Filed under: Other Reality Shows, CastingA day hasn't gone by where we haven't received some sort of tip or email asking us, the TV Squad, how to get on [insert reality show here]. Unfortunately no, Simon Cowell does not work for us, and Donald Trump isn't my BFF, so we really can't help all that much.
The folks at RealityWanted.com often send us a list of new and existing reality shows that are looking for new, er, talent, and they've given us permission to make mention of them here. We'll try to make this a regular feature as often as we get a new list.
This time we have Jingles, The Moment of Truth and other new shows. Continue reading Reality show casting calls Permalink&n... this | |&... As the two executive producers behind FX's phenomenal drama Rescue Me, the two have had their plate full ever since the WGA strike ended. For those that haven't heard, Rescue Me was renewed for a network-length 22 episode season scheduled to air in spring 2009. I had the opportunity to sit in on a conference call with Leary and Tolan earlier today and both pointed out that this is an entirely different animal since they're used to producing 13 episode seasons. Leary was quick to make a sports analogy: they pretty much have been working on season five since last year's football season and they probably won't wrap until next year's basketball playoffs. He also made an alcohol analogy: it's like they're in TV rehab. Coming from the guy who plays Tommy Gavin, I'd say that's fairly appropriate.Continue reading Denis Leary and Peter Tolan on Rescue Me, Red Sox, and writing Permalink&... Sometimes this is because syndicated versions of the shows are used (why I have no idea) and sometimes it's because they couldn't get the rights to use certain music/songs on the DVD so they have to take them out and/or replace them with different music. It's this latter point that has fans of The Fugitive up in arms.
For the release of The Fugitive: season Two, Volume One (oh, I hate these volume releases, but that's for another post), CBS Home Entertainment not only replaced music in certain scenes and certain episodes, they completely stripped all of the music (except the title theme) from certain episodes and did it over with soundalike versions. They also replaced the music that plays over the closing credits.Continue reading Fugitive fans ticked at CBS; CBS responds Permalink&am... this | |&... TV Squad Thursday, June 19, 2008Gordon Ramsay can swear, says Australia Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Celebrities, Hell's KitchenTV fans in the United States are accustomed to hearing Chef Gordon Ramsay's swears bleeped and blurred out on FOX's Hell's Kitchen, but in other parts of the world, you can hear and see the whole thing.
In Australia, for example. One of the chef's other shows, Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares (where he goes into troubled restaurants and helps them get back on their feet) airs at 8:30, and Senator Cory Bernardi wanted the words banned because "there is no excuse for gratuitous bad language to be broadcast repeatedly." No excuse? Has the Senator ever seen some of the restaurants and restaurant owners that Ramsay has to deal with?
But fear not, Australian fans of swearing. The Senate there has said no to the calls to ban the words, even if Ramsay did use two words 80 times in the span of 40 minutes in one episode of the show. That must have been one dirty kitchen. Permalink&am... this | |&... Hot as in busy as well as in looking good. She's also smart, funny, observant and remarkably candid. Recently, I spoke with her for TV Squad about the success of the Sex & the City movie, her new HBO project Sensitive Skin, and a whole lot of other things, including Star Trek, aging, Universal TV in the 1970s and more.Allison Waldman: When Sex & the City ended, you didn't want to do the movie. Now it's done and it's a huge success. Kim Cattrall: It's extraordinary. I look back four years ago when this was a runaway idea, I just did not feel ready to do it. We had reached such a high point, I wasn't sure I had anything else to say. I also had incredible personal challenges. My marriage was coming apart, also, my dad was diagnosed with dementia. I really needed a time out.
