New Deerhoof Single Is Sheet Music

Deerhoof's Offend Maggie is out this October. Adding a wrinkle to the current trend of fan-made remixes and videos, the band's released the album's first single "Fresh Born" as a score that fans (or whatever) can download and record. Once they're finished, they can upload it as an MP3 that other fans are able to then listen to on the band's site. You can download the score, upload your hit single, and get the full info here. (If you want, you're free to also click on the image on this very page to see it in larger form and start cribbing now.) The sheet music was debuted (i.e. passed around) this past Friday at Deerhoof's show in Brooklyn. Those folks got a heard start, have already birthed some "Fresh Born"'s. Check it out. The band will release their version of the song, too. Let's hope it's better than that guy's. Just kidding that guy. Offend Maggie is out 10/7 on Kill Rock Stars.

Mercury Prize 2008 Shortlist Announced For Your Gambling Pleasure

Another year, another shortlist for the Mercury Prize, another exciting way to tap your line of credit with the bookie. 2007 belonged to Klaxons' Myths Of The Near Future, who went on to collaborate with Rihanna, so you know this prize has clout. This year's Mercury Prize -- brought to you by Nationwide, honoring the best UK album of the year -- offers a fairly classy shortlist, with a special nod of approval from us for the inclusion of Burial's great Untrue album. And it gets even better for the anonymous DJ: Not only is he (she?) shortlisted, but according to the oddsmakers at William Tell, he (she?) is the odds-on favorite. Here's your full list of odds and noms:

Music Review: Over the Rhine - The Trumpet Child

Over the Rhine doles out their fifteenth installment of genius with The Trumpet Child. I’d only been in Europe for a month when I found myself desperate for a true taste of home. The American music playing in the supermarket was of the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears variety. Sure, it brought back images of high school in the States, but not the lush greens of Oregon, nor the fireflies of Ohio, nor even the cracked sidewalks...

Music Review: Elvis Presley - Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden

Essential Elvis: Chapter 24. Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden was issued in June of 1972. While this album only reached Number 11 on the Billboard charts, it would go on to sell more than 3 million copies. This album was also a recording of a complete concert rather than a pieced together affair. That fact gives the listener an accurate feel of an actual 1970’s...

Product Review: ExpoDisc: Professional Digital White Balance - From ExpoImaging

The ExpoDisc was very easy to use and provided excellent results. Have you ever tried to get good white balance from your camera, but the consistency was never good? I am sure that you tried some of those preset balance settings, but they did not always work as well as you expected them to. This is where the ExpoDisc comes in. Sure you can always use a light meter to get your correct readings. Once you have...

Music Review: Alice Cooper - Along Came A Spider

Cooper celebrates his 25th album with a gem. Alice Cooper is an endlessly intriguing figure. Emerging from the late 1960s, he purposefully deciding to create an over the top theatrical persona, wishing to wear the mantle of rock and roll bad boy. He succeeded at his goal and did not stop there; he pushed the limits of what was considered good taste, resulting in his getting banned from venues...

Up Close With The American Idols - Michael Johns

Michael Johns discusses the tour, his career, and why tossing a football with David Cook might be dangerous. Entering the world of American Idol is a surreal mixture of superstardom and ordinary people who are just trying to make sense of it all. At their summer tour stop in Tacoma, Washington I got an up close look at a day in the life of an American Idol. In part one of a five-part series of backstage interviews with the Idols, I talked with Michael...

Blu-ray Review: Be Kind Rewind

A surprising film that's vastly more than the trailers let on. Marketed as a simple comedy about two guys remaking popular movies, Be Kind Rewind offers far more than that. It’s a comedy with a softer, even somber side. Yes, the movie “remakes” are fun, but that’s just the surface of this quirky piece. As an owner of a video store still renting out VHS, Danny Glover is determined to make...

What We Know About The Joker

Ruminations about the man behind the masque. Though this past weekend’s top performing movie is titled The Dark Knight, it might easily have been called "The Clown Prince." Heath Ledger’s portrayal of The Joker, already hailed as Oscar-worthy, owes more to Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice than it does to previous Batman malefactors. Ironically, Keaton was the first...

Movie Review: Vantage Point

Déjà vu doodoo... Formulated and orchestrated with all the stylistic panache of a freshman Psych 101 term paper, Vantage Point enumerates Suspense For Dummies diagramming, Cliff-noting shortcuts on its depreciated way to ‘Master of Suspense’ - Alfred Hitchcock - emulation. Whereas Sir Hitch plugged into primal fears of the unknown by having ordinary...
