New TV On The Radio - ''Dancing Choose''

Our first taste of TVOTR's forthcoming Return To Cookie Mountain followup Dear Science was the funky, optimistic, mystic (and in the chorus, PM Dawn?) leaning "Golden Age," Kyp letting us know that, indeed, a golden age is coming around. Tunde-fronted "Dancing Choose" is taste number two. His scattershot lyrics and quick vocal delivery has more urgency to it, but check out the similar psychedelic smoothness in the chorus. Two other things worth your attention: Axl Rose gets a mention and "Dancing Choose" is a pun.

New Land Of Talk - ''Some Are Lakes''

It was just about a year ago that we had Andrew WK run around CMJ as our expert party correspondent. The night before we filmed I was awed by relative newcomer Bon Iver at Bowery, and hours later I was awed by seeing him bounce around the LES with Lizzie Powell of Class of '06 BTW Land Of Talk. She mentioned then the pair were "working on something." Then she and Justin told Andrew about their idea of a party ("renting go-carts"). A few months later, the "something" Lizzie spoke of revealed itself via MySpace blog post, confirming Vernon was producing the long awaited follow-up to LoT's buzzy debut EP Applause Cheer Boo Hiss. In the time since the band parted ways with their great drummer Bucky Wheaton (now getting kit work from the Slip's Andrew Barr), and finished recording the nine tracks in Montreal and one at Bon Iver's parents' place in Eau Claire, WI which fill out Some Are Lakes. It's the title track we get to sample today, which starts with Lizzie's open-string chord voicing

NBA Jerseys Are The New Imperialism [Marketing]

Hard to believe our nation's star athletes have time to go to the gym and practice jumpshots or whatever, what with all their marketing strategy meetings and reality shows and plotting to invade China like the second coming of opium. Sports stars and their sponsors have known for years that China is the market of the future-"If only 1% of Chinese buy our sneakers, that's $300 million more in revenue blah blah..." just like every other business in the world. But the Olympics have whet athletes' appetites even more. They want to rule China. The question is, why is China letting them do it? The Olympics were an eye-opener to some foreign athletes visiting China. Hundreds of millions of Chinese tuned into the games on television, and Kobe Bryant, the popular Los Angeles Lakers player, was greeted everywhere he went in Beijing to chants of "Kobe! Kobe! Kobe!" Sales of his National Basketball Association jersey - and those of eight other N.B.A. stars, including Mr. Wade - top even those of C

Interview: Richie Havens

My few Precious moments with Richie Havens. Sometimes when you get to know somebody only through what you see of them on a movie screen or hear them sing, the impression you form of them turns out to be completely erroneous. However, there are those rare people who, when you do actually get the opportunity to meet or talk to them, turn out to be just what you thought they were. Richie Haven...

Maureen Dowd Seeks Out Most Embittered Old Lady in Denver [Pumas]

How many times now has Maureen Dowd come away from a post-primary Democratic event having apparently only talked to the one insane Nobama PUMA lady in attendance? First there was, of course, the ear plug lady, who managed to get the attention of every journalist at the campaign rally. But one imagines the world's best columnist had to search a bit to find this nut in Denver, where the attendees are a little more carefully screened: She's voting for McCain and had nothing nice to say about the Obamas. What about the kids, I asked. "Adorable," she agreed. Well, I said, Michelle raised them. "I think her mother does," Anderson shot back, adding: "I wonder if Michelle would give the Queen one of her little knuckle punches?" Lady, America does not have a Queen. Also, what is wrong with you?

Music Review: Prince - Batman: Motion Picture Soundtrack

Revisiting Prince's oft-maligned music for Tim Burton's 1989 megahit. In 1989, Prince released his soundtrack to Tim Burton's blockbuster movie Batman. Music critics generally viewed the album as a disappointment. His fan base largely dismissed it as merely marking time. Nearly twenty years later, it is high time for reappraisal. The past decade-plus of mostly subpar Prince albums has benefited Batman. If...

Music Review: King Hobo - King Hobo

When a collection of musicians get together for a common purpose the result can be exceptional. Back during the Sounds of the Underground Festival of 2005, Opeth’s Per Wiberg and Clutch’s Jean-Paul Gaster had an inspirational flash of genius. A meeting of musical minds followed and a general invite went out to like-minded muso’s. Curiosity got the better of them, before long a cast of players had been set up, and the project...
