Be Your Own Pet Bow Out In London

Before Be Your Own Pet made a video for the banned-in-the-USA tune "Becky," we told you the Tennessee punks were calling it quits after their UK tour. It's now after their UK tour. They are no longer. While drying your tears, you can watch footage of Jemina & Co. giving it their all this past Tuesday (8/26) at Dingwalls in London. The guys take off their shirts. The audience comes on stage. Jemina does that Karen O hand on the hip thing a lot. A good time was had. Any guesses what they played last?

Blogger Arrested For Leaking GN'R

The guy the internet has to thank (blame?) for early listens of Chinese Democracy -- the very same one who had himself a little visit from the feds not so long ago -- has been arrested, charged, and released on bail over posting the songs to his site. The AP reports he "faces a maximum of three years in prison if convicted, and five years if it's found that he did it for commercial gain." This development was celebrated equally by the RIAA and all people who have actually heard the leak because it is pretty terrible and it's nice to have someone punished.

Which Country Singer Invested in Houses of Ill Repute? [Blind Item Roundup]

If you are bored this weekend while everyone else is away, go see Boeing Boeing on the Broadway. I saw it last night and it is really, really fun. (Mary McCormack, who knew?) Something that was probably also really really fun was the three hour sex fest enjoyed by an actor and an extra, our blind item from yesterday. Y'all were pretty divided over the identity of the fellow; some said it was Charlie Sheen, others Jeremy Piven. My favorite theory was Sam Waterston. Today we have a 70's pinup who got into an awkward situation involving gum during sex and a morally outspoken country singer who secretly has investments in several overseas brothels. 1) "Which 70s pin-up got himself into a rather sticky situation during a recent amorous encounter when his partner forgot to remove her chewing gum?" [Mirror] 2) "This A list country singer who is really outspoken and appears to be morally on the straight and narrow, has some business interests he probably hopes his fans never hear about it. Tu

Artists Vs. iTunes: Fight For Your Right To Suck! [Music]

Is iTunes helping the music industry—or destroying it? That's the dramatic question we will answer for you in this post. Itunes is the single largest retailer of music in the US, period. It sells nine out of every ten digital song downloads in the country. And since it helped put the Tower Records of the world out of business, lots of artists think there's nowhere to go except iTunes. But how much money are (even famous) bands really making off all those 99-cent singles? Here's, uh, one perspective: Irving Azoff, the manager of numerous high-profile acts including the Eagles, says that a few years ago he presented the band with a financial analysis showing that their royalties to date from iTunes sales were far lower than anyone expected. Guitarist Glenn Frey did some back-of-the-envelope math of his own. "His comment was that it amounted to 39 minutes on stage in Kansas City," Mr. Azoff recalls with a chuckle. Ha, and you know they don't pay much in Kansas City! Now there's a bu

Democratic Convention A Battle Of Crazy Hats [Photo Gallery]

Forget the speeches and the platform, the delegate votes and the big Barack Obama speech tonight. Political conventions are nothing if not stages on which the craziest campaign volunteers — both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have them! — can strut around in their wildest costumes. No one's been spotted with a sticker on their forehead yet, even though that's a trademark move of Clinton's crazier supporters, or wearing an Abercrombie shirt, even though that's the preferred apparel of Barack Obama's emptiest young volunteers. But the hoi polloi are coming to the big stadium event tonight, so anything is still possible. So far the DNC has seen hats and other attire in flavors vaguely gay, cowboyish, flag-desecrating, Mexican and just plain insane. There's a photo gallery after the jump, culled (mostly) by our own Richard Blakeley from the sea of convention footage. galleryPost('dnccrazyhats&... 16, 'Battle Of Crazy Hats At The DNC');

Alex Jones Goes Berserk in Denver

If you had any doubt that Alex Jones was a thug, a bully and a jackass, events in Denver should lay them to rest. If you ever had any doubt that Alex Jones was a thug, a bully and a jackass, events this week in Denver ought to lay those doubts to rest. It all started with a protest put together by the anarcho-hippies of Recreate68 and some of their allies. They planned to go to the Denver mint to hold a nonviolent protest in which they were apparently...

Famous Pothead A Democratic Convention Whip [The Cinema]

Here's Kal Penn as captured by the LA Times at the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. You may recognize Penn: He's the famous pothead "Kumar" from that famous pothead movie series, Harold & Kumar. Apparently someone asked him to be a "political whip," herding delegates while wearing a headset, and he totally went for it. "The majority of kids I've met on the road are struggling," Penn told the newspaper. Well, fine, but when the Republicans want to portray Democratic politicians as of vapid, decadent, amoral Hollywood types, they won't have to go after Paris Hilton and Britney Spears anymore. They've got Penn working the convention floor. And something tells me they won't be emphasizing his role as a physician on House. Anyway, whatever, if you try to mold your self-expression around how political extremists might twist things you'll never come up with culture gems like Harold & Kumar. Enjoy a sampling from their more terroristic oeuvre after the jump. [LA Times] (P

Michael Kors's Paltry Project Runway Gains [Celebrity-industrial Complex]

Judging from the Times Style section profile of Michael Kors, the Project Runway judge can't go out in public without being recognized and accosted. But what's the financial upside on Kors' two-year association with the fantastically popular reality show? Kors' sales at Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan are up 50 percent over three years, which is encouraging. But some of that success has to be credited to a 2003 capital infusion from two British jewelry investors and, allegedly, to Kors' dogged prowling of sales floors. When the Times finally buttonholed a Kors company executive into estimating the financial benefit from Runway specifically, the returns aren't so bright as the anecdotes suggest: An estimated mere 5 percent bump in gross sales thanks to Runway. The Times' Style writer doesn't say if this compounds each year or is a one-time increase, but a business reality show judge would be fast with a mean quip either way. [Times]

DVD Review: Eleventh Hour

The American version of this show is coming soon, is the British original worth your time? This fall, CBS will premiere a new, semi-sci-fi series in which one man (with some help, of course) thwarts mad scientists (sort of, anyway). Entitled Eleventh Hour, the series is actually a remake of a British series of the same name. Currently available on DVD, the British version stars Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation) and...
