61 Reforms to C-61, Day 20: TPMs - No Exception for Teaching

The "copyright balance" is a challenge that every country faces, yet the choices that each makes says a lot about which concerns are prioritized. Bill C-61 says virtually nothing about the prospect that teachers may find themselves locked out of materials that they need for the classroom, a position that sends an unfortunate signal about where education ranks as a governmental priority. The impact of anti-circumvention legislation has attracted significant criticism from some teachers groups, including the Canadian Association of University Teachers (Executive Director Jim Turk noted that "in prohibiting all circumvention, the proposed legislation will lock down a vast amount of digital material, preventing its use for research, education and innovation") and the Film Studies Association of Canada. ACTRA Reacts to Member Criticism

Several weeks ago I pointed to a great post by ACTRA member Jason Chesworth on Bill C-61. Chesworth has continued to post on the issue, noting the link between one of the organization's executives and Sony BMG. That post has drawn a rebuke from ACTRA's Executive Director who would seemingly prefer to keep criticism out of the public eye.

B.C. Court Orders Thousands in Damages over Web Libel

A B.C. court has ordered a Nanaimo man to pay an Australian man more than $179,000 in damages arising from hundreds of libelous statements made on multiple websites during a four year period.

Stanton Town Hall Set for August 28th

Bruce Stanton, Conservative MP for Simcoe North, has now set a copyright town hall meeting for August 28th. The meeting, which Stanton says comes in response to the high level of interest in the issue, will be held in Coldwater, Ontario at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 270 (2 Michael Anne Dr.).Update: There is now a Facebook event tied to the town hall meeting.
