Fair Copyright for Canada: The Friendfeed As the amount of online activity related to fair copyright in Canada grows, it is becoming increasingly difficulty to track everything. With that in mind, I've created a new Friendfeed channel for Fair Copyright for Canada. The channel currently includes aggregated blog postings, videos from YouTube, photos from Flickr, the google Fair Copyright for Canada calendar, and bookmarks to relevant media coverage on Delicious. There are also two active search services that will gather blog postings and YouTube videos tagged FairCopyright4Canada. ... If you want your posting included in the feed, simply add the tag. If this sounds useful, you can subscribe to the rss feed, bookmark the page, embed the feed on your blog, or become a member of Friendfeed and track it. Michaelgeist.ca Tuesday, July 22, 200861 Reforms to C-61, Day 22: TPMs - No Exception for Filtering Programs As part of the U.S. Copyright Office's DMCA rulemaking procedure (under which it identifies non-infringing uses that are hampered by the DMCA), the Office has twice issued an exemption for circumvention of filtering software programs in order to identify the list of sites included within the program. Filtering programs can be used to filter or block inappropriate material, yet the same programs have been subject to considerable criticism over concerns that they may be overbroad and block perfectly legitimate material. The only way for a party to ascertain whether their site is included on the block list is to access the lists contained in the software program, a process that typically requires circumvention. In 2000, the Copyright Office found that an exception for filtering programs was needed. It reaffirmed the decision in 2003. In 2006, Seth Finklestein, the primary supporter of the "censorware" exception abandoned the fight for another renewal Michaelgeist.ca Tuesday, July 22, 2008Google's First Hubristic Leap: Competing With the Internet Jeff Jarvis submits: Google’s (GOOG) hubris may have finally gotten the better of them. See this from the official google blog about the launch of Knol, the Wikipedia-About.com-Associated... it just officially launched:The web contains vast amounts of information, but not everything worth knowing is on the web. An enormous amount of information resides in people’s heads: millions of people know useful things and billions more could benefit from that knowledge. Knol will encourage these people to contribute their knowledge online and make it accessible to everyone.Complete Story » The Internet Stock Blog Tuesday, July 22, 2008Amazon/Overstock Gamble May Pay Off Boaz Berkowitz submits:I was surprised to notice how silent Amazon (AMZN) appeared to be vis-à-vis New York’s new tax law during the company's earnings call yesterday. Thomas Szkutak, Amazon’s Senior VP & CFO, brushed off questions regarding the tax issue as “too early to comment.” By contrast, in Overstock’s (OSTK) latest Q2 2008 earnings call transcript, the company had much to say about the issue. What really caught my attention was when Jonathan Johnson, Overstock’s SVP, stated that the New York State Senate had voted to repeal New York’s most recent tax law which would put this whole mess behind us. For those of you who weren’t aware, New York State passed a new law that went into effect on June 1, 2008. The law, dubbed “the Amazon tax,” requires all internet companies with affiliates in NY State to charge sales tax on shipments bound for New York. The State expects thi The Internet Stock Blog Tuesday, July 22, 2008Microsoft Loses Top Exec to Juniper - Sign of Online Failure Ron Haruni submits:Microsoft’s Kevin Johnson, president of the Platforms & Services Division, has decided to leave the company to head up Juniper Networks (JNPR), a Silicon Valley maker of networking hardware. Johnson, who is 47 years old and has been with Microsoft (MSFT) for 16 years as one of three divisional presidents under chief executive Steve Ballmer, was seen as the point person in the company’s attempt to acquire Yahoo (YHOO). Whether this development will further complicate matters for Yahoo! is still unclear.Complete Story » The Internet Stock Blog Tuesday, July 22, 2008 1 2 3 Archived "internet - Top Stories" opinions:
