The Gloves Are Off: Adobe Targets Microsoft's Enterprise Video Market Lead

Dan Rayburn submits: Historically, Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows media technologies have always dominated the enterprise market for multiple reasons, the biggest being that the WM Player was bundled into the OS and the server is cheap to deploy. And while I think Microsoft still has the majority share of the enterprise market, Adobe (ADBE) continues to get more aggressive in targeting IT decision makers inside enterprise organizations. With Adobe making the licensing costs for FMS3 a lot cheaper than they use to be, and the fact that live Flash is now considered stable in FMS3, I am beginning to hear from more enterprise customers who are now evaluating Flash.Complete Story »

Going to Nokia WOMWorld Workshop in Helsinki September 10-14

Details have yet to be finalized, but it looks like I'll be going to a Nokia Mobile workshop (paid for by Nokia, including carbon offsets!) September 10-14,2008 being organzied by Nokia's WOMWorld folks. Sounds like fun. Maybe I can lead a session on Mobile Muse and SIFTTool. Here's a portion of their invite: QUOTE It's taking place in September between the 11th and 14th, and will be the first of its kind hosted by Nokia. We're contacting everyone from creative's, designers, video producers to open source software bloggers and mobile tech pioneers. There will be a number of workshops that'll see discussion with participants, and with Nokia guys, about the future of different online arenas and mobile technology. Workshops that we hope you'd like to join in with and make yourself heard. END QUOTE In the meantime, time to start my travel research. If anybody has been to Helsinki, love to have the following questions answered by a Helsinki person: Where can I get a pay as you

Copyright Lobbying Behind Closed Doors

As thousands of individual Canadians speak out against C-61 this summer, certain groups have obtained special access to Industry Minister Jim Prentice and his political team to make their case. The new lobbying rules require lobbyists to report their communications with politicians, political staff, and senior policy officials. With the first round of reports now online (dating back to July 2nd), the following organizations have recently met with Prentice's political staff on intellectual property matters: Canadian Recording Industry Association (lobbyist David Dyer meeting on August 11th with Prentice Chief of Staff Steven Kelly and political policy staff Zoe Addington and Bill Rogers) Microsoft (lobbyist Geoff Norquay meeting on July 7th with Kelly) CTVglobemedia (meeting on July 31st with Kelly) google (meeting on July 31st with Addington) Meetings with policy officials (rather than political staff) includes ADISQ and Astral media (with Canadian Heritage AD

61 Reforms to C-61, Day 43: ILTs - Safe Harbour Largely Illusory

The inclusion of provisions for "Information Location Tool Providers" - ie. search engines - was a bit of a surprise. The ILT provisions unexpectedly appeared in Bill C-60 and there were concerns expressed with the approach adopted by the government. ILT provisions are back in C-61 with the focus on providing a legal safe harbour for search engines. The approach is to remove financial liability for ILTs for reproducing or communicating a work provided that they meet certain conditions. While that makes sense, the implementation leaves much to be desired. Indeed, as currently worded most search engines would not qualify for the safe harbour. Section 41.27(2) provides that ILTs only qualify for the safe harbour if they meet six conditions. These include: makes and caches a reproduction in an automated fashion as an ILT communicates the reproduction to the public does not modify the reproduction complies with any terms s

Yahoo: Pondering a Disney Connection?

Larry Dignan (ZDNet) submits: If Yahoo’s battle with google (GOOG) has taught us anything it’s that the company isn’t run by engineers. Sure, Yahoo is tech savvy. Sure it has an open platform. And sure it’ll do things like plan a Widget Channel with Intel (INTC) and tout it at a developers conference. But Yahoo is really about audience aggregation–the type of thing that would make a large media company very interested. Intel and Yahoo said Wednesday (statement) that they plan to team up to launch a Widget Channel (right), a TV application designed to bring rich internet applications to the living room. Consumer electronics that use Intel’s architecture will offer the Yahoo Widget Engine, an applications platform that delivers widgets. The Widget Channel will allow developers to use JavaScript, XML, HTML and Adobe’s Flash.Complete Story »
