Telegraph-Journal on ''Harper's Draconian Copyright Bill'' Charles Moore, a freelance writer whose work has appeared in dozens of magazines around the world, pens an op-ed in the Saint John Telegraph-Journal on the copyfight in Canada. Michaelgeist.ca Thursday, August 21, 2008Financial Bloggers: The Conscience of Wall Street? David Merkel submits: Many CFAs blog, though it is a tiny fraction of the total pool of CFAs. Many of them contribute to Seeking Alpha. Granted, if you look at lists of the most popular investment weblogs, few of the writers are CFAs. Why? Well, having basic knowledge about investments and ethics does not mean that you can write about it well. For those who can write well, there are other options, most of which are more remunerative: Write internal research for a buy-side firm that no one else sees.Be a sell-side analyst for those who trade with your firm.Write a newsletter for paying clients.Manage money, and write an entertaining quarterly/monthly missive that adds to the subjective value of having money managed by you.Write for RealMoney (TSCM), or some other major media newspaper/website. The thing is, for most bloggers, it is self-expression, not remuneration, that matters. For me, it is giving something back to the broader investing community.& The Internet Stock Blog Thursday, August 21, 2008Guglielminetti on the Canadian Copyfight Bruno Guglielminetti of Radio Canada continues the French language coverage of the Canadian copyfight. Michaelgeist.ca Thursday, August 21, 2008U.S. Judge Rules Fair Use Should Factor Into Notice and Takedown Demands Since I've blogged this week about C-61's notice-and-notice approach for ISPs, it is worth noting that yesterday a U.S. judge ruled that copyright holders must consider fair use as part of the DMCA notice-and-takedown system. Michaelgeist.ca Thursday, August 21, 2008The Tyee on Roaming Envy The Tyee contrasts the Canadian wireless market with the experience in Europe. Michaelgeist.ca Thursday, August 21, 2008Amazon Pushes Cloud Computing Further Blaise Zerega submits:
Amazon's (AMZN) new Elastic Block Computing initiative raises the bar for what will be possible with cloud computing. And when you think about how much more efficient this technology is compared to that in use by traditional data centers, it's obvious that companies like Amazon and google (GOOG) have a huge advantage compared to incumbents like AT&T (T). Amazon's EBC is a very cool way of achieving storage in the network cloud: it preserves the "instance" when data is retrieved or a transaction executed, so that the instance can be re-used without the database being queried again. I'm thinking of it as a sort of cache-in-the-cloud.Complete Story » The Internet Stock Blog Thursday, August 21, 200861 Reforms to C-61, Day 44: ILTs - Notice and Takedown for Search Engines By far the most problematic aspect of the ILT provision is the creation of a notice-and-takedown system for search engines. Unlike ISPs - who are subject to the more-balanced notice-and-notice approach - ILTs are effectively subject to a notice-and-takedown system without any of the counter-notification or balancing provisions contained in the U.S. DMCA. Bill C-61 creates a parallel notice and takedown system for ILTs since section 41.27(2)(f) limits the availability of the safe harbour to instances where no notification of copyright infringement has been received. This will effectively force ILTs to remove content upon notification since failure to do so risks potential liability. While a notice-and-takedown approach for ILTs is bad enough, it is made worse by the absence of any balancing provisions. For example, the U.S. DMCA includes a "counter-notification... provision that allows for the re-posting of content that has been taken down. Michaelgeist.ca Thursday, August 21, 2008U.S and Global Search Share: Google's Ups and Downs Erick Schonfeld submits: google (GOOG) keeps gaining search market share in the U.S., but its global dominance is not as great as previously indicated. Last night, comScore released its search market share and query growth numbers for July, and Lehman Brothers reported the numbers in a note this morning. Here are the main search market share percentage numbers in the U.S. from comScore:Complete Story » The Internet Stock Blog Thursday, August 21, 2008 Archived "internet - Top Stories" opinions:
