Microsoft Top Display Advertiser for June

Ron Haruni submits:comScore, Inc., a company which provides marketing data and services to many of the Internet’s largest businesses, released Tuesday its June ‘08 ranking of the top online display ad publishers and advertisers, based on data from the comScore Ad Metrix service. Fox Interactive media, which owns MySpace.com - a division of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. (NWS), ranked as the top display ad publishing property in June, serving 52.3 billion ad views, grabbing almost 16% market share. MySpace.com accounted for 51 billion of these views. Apparently, having campaign optimization capabilities within the company and the massive amount of data on the advertising, has given MySpace.com the ability to build an effective and powerful ad network.Complete Story »

Valuation Metrics Of Large vs. Small Website Acquisitions

We all read on TechCrunch about the huge internet acquisitions that are seemingly made every week. YouTube sold for over a billion dollars, Bebo sold for $850 million, etc. While those big acquisitions get all the headlines, there’s a very active market in buying and selling smaller websites that doesn’t get nearly as much notice. For every YouTube that has tens of millions of users, there are hundreds of thousands of websites with smaller, but attractive audiences. While looking into the market for buying and selling smaller websites (generally with price tags under $1 million) I’ve noticed that there’s a huge discrepancy in valuation metrics that smart investors will take advantage of.Complete Story »

Russia's Rising Internet Population

Erick Schonfeld submits: For Web companies looking to expand abroad, Russia needs to be at the top of their list of markets to enter. Russia has the fastest growing internet population in Europe, followed by France and Spain. In a comparison of 16 European Internet populations by country, comScore reports that Russia’s Internet audience for the month of June grew 27 percent year over year, compared to 21 percent growth in France and 15 percent growth in Spain. (Is Russia part of Europe? It is for the purposes of this analysis). If you look at the total size of the Internet populations in each country, however, Russia ranks fifth with 17.5 million monthly Internet visitors. But by Internet penetration, Russia ranks last, with only 14 percent of the total population online. So there is still lots of room for growth there.Complete Story »

61 Reforms to C-61, Day 48: Education Harms - Lessons Must Be Destroyed After the Course

In addition to the prospect of new liability, the lesson provisions include a series of draconian conditions that undermine rather than facilitate education. For example, Section 30(5)(a) provides that the education institution is required to: destroy any fixation of the lesson within 30 days after the day on which the students who are enrolled in the course have received their final course evaluations; I am not making this up. Bill C-61 requires teachers that utilize this educational exemption to destroy the lessons that they have created for their courses with one month of the conclusion of the course. Teachers must recreate the lessons each year which obviously establishes a strong incentive to run as far away as possible from these new "rights."&am... If the government is serious about supporting education, it will drop this embarrassing condition from bill.
