The Gift That Keeps On Giving - Yglesias Regretting The American Revolution The last time I called him on it, he explained that he was simply arguing a counterfactual...but he keeps coming back to it and picks July 4th for this marvelous sentiment:
Ultimately, I think the United States is a pretty awesome country but it very plausibly would have been even awesomer had English and American political leaders in the late 18th century been farsighted enough to find compromises that would have held the empire together.
Way to be patriotic, Matthew!! Windsofchange.net Saturday, July 05, 2008Happy down under too Dominic Puiu writes from Bondi Junction, NSW, Australia in response to our posts here and here about the University of Leicester national Happiness Index and the pseudonymous Spengler's computation of national happiness based on plotting fertility rates versus suicide rates. Mr. Puiu comments: According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the suicide rates in Australia is just above 11 per 100,000 and the fertility rate is just above 1.84 per 100,000. By my reckoning this puts Australia third on the list after the USA.
Australia is an industrialised nation of over 20 million people, so I am surprised it was not included in the analysis. Mr. Puiu adds: Thanks for the Powerline blog. You and James Lileks put Minnesota on the map for people like me. It is reasonable to say that were it not for these two blogs, all I would know about your State is that Muslim taxi drivers at Minneapolis airport sought to refuse to carry people with alcohol. Needless to say I know a lot more tha Powerlineblog.com Saturday, July 05, 2008The price of freedom The video above shows the mass reenlistement ceremony in the Al Faw Palace rotunda at Camp Victory, Baghdad. The troops chose to celebrate Independence Day in a way that gives expressive form to the price of freedom. According to the Army account, General Petraeus presided over the ceremony and led the airmen, marines, sailors, and soldiers in their oath to defend their country against all enemies both foreign and domestic. "You and your comrades here have been described as America's new greatest generation, and, in my view, you have more than earned that description," Petraeus said. "It is the greatest of honors to soldier here with you."
In his July 4 New York Post column Ralph Peters totes up "the price of freedom" in the story of Army Lt. Tim Burks and his legacy: Second Lt. Peter Burks graduated from Texas A&M, then chose to join the US Army. Commissioned through Officer candidate School and sent to Iraq as a combat platoon leader, he told his parents his goal was to bring Powerlineblog.com Saturday, July 05, 2008Saturday stops from Gerry...07.05.08 Saturday~

The GOP's December Surprise
NEWS: Is the GOP cooking the books to avoid recession till after election Day?
By James K. Galbraith [ url] Democracyforamerica.com Saturday, July 05, 2008Caution: Mangled metaphor ahead The crossroads is a venerable metaphor in American song and poetry. Robert Johnson devoted a seminal blues song to it in "Crossroads Blues" and Robert Frost provided an ironic take on it in "The Road Not Taken."
Yesterday Barack obama concluded his swing through red states in Montana. The New York Times reports that, speaking at a picnic outside the World Museum of Mining in Butte, Obama declared that the nation had ?hit a crossroads and we?ve got to make a fast turn.?
Times reporter Jeff Zeleny explains that Obama was urging voters at an Independence Day celebration to support his candidacy if they wanted to end the war in Iraq. The key to decisions at the crossroads, however, is not the speed of the turn. At the crossroads we can turn in either direction with equal speed. Deliberation is of the essence because we seek to make a wise choice. Powerlineblog.com Saturday, July 05, 2008Charges for employing illegal alien workers hit higher up the food chain "Immigration theater", the second act. Michellemalkin.com Saturday, July 05, 2008Aristotle and the Ten Second Problem: Free Will and the Martial Arts There was a fascinating article in science Journal on new consciousness research. The study demonstrates that at least some decisions are made by the brain ten seconds before we are conscious of making a decision. The brain, they have found, appears to make up its mind 10 seconds before we become conscious of a decision -- an eternity at the speed of thought.Their findings challenge conventional notions of choice."We think our decisions are conscious," said neuroscientist John-Dylan Haynes at the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience in Berlin, who is pioneering this research. "But these data show that consciousness is just the tip of the iceberg. This doesn't rule out free will, but it does make it implausible."That cannot be the whole truth, obviously. Clearly some decisions are not made this way, because some have to be made in far less than ten seconds -- turning the wheel of the car to avoid an accident, for example. We would normally say that these choices are the Windsofchange.net Saturday, July 05, 2008Mosque and State MOSQUE AND STATE....Juan Cole says that "the Iraqi government has decided one of the contentious issues that was holding up the provincial elections law." Americans&rsquo... unhappy birthday: ‘Too much wrong right now’.
The nation’s psyche is battered and bruised, the sense of pessimism palpable. Young or old, Republican or Democrat, economically stable or struggling, Americans are questioning where they are and where they are going. And they wonder who or what might ride to their rescue.
