Obama, the Press, and Iraq Obama, THE PRESS, AND IRAQ....The big story on Saturday was Spiegel's interview with Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki in which he endorsed Barack obama's 16-month timeline for withdrawal of U.S. troops. The bush administration was so unnerved by this that... Washingtonmonthly.com Sunday, July 20, 2008Understanding the Media, Part 438 UNDERSTANDING THE MEDIA, PART 438....According to an anonymous but well-connected source here at Netroots Nation, the First Law of foreign Policy Punditry states that the less you know about a region, the more dangerous it must be. Thus, when a... Washingtonmonthly.com Sunday, July 20, 2008Free speech in an age of jihad This past April our friends at the The New Criterion co-hosted (together with the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies) a symposium on the related themes of "libel tourism," "hate speech" and political freedom. Among the speakers were Roger Kimball, Stanley Kurtz, Robert Spencer, Andrew McCarthy and Mark Steyn. Their presentations have now been revised for publication and bundled into a special New Criterion pamphlet "Free speech in an age of jihad." The pamphlet is available for purchase for $4 (plus $2 shipping). Related Webcasts are accessible here. Powerlineblog.com Sunday, July 20, 2008Is Obama Close to Picking His Running Mate? Several weeks ago on Political Insider, I suggested the first week of August might be the best time to unveil running a running mate.First Read: "If obama plans to name his running mate before the Olympics, he's
probably got to be close to a decision, because he'd have to name the
running mate in the week he returns from his overseas trip. Time's
running out for Team Obama if they want a big pre-Olympics VP rollout.
So maybe he's a lot closer than we all realize, and maybe these gym stops are well, you know..." Taegan Goddard's Political Wire Sunday, July 20, 2008Gregoire Braces for Another Tough Fight According to a new SurveyUSA poll, Washington state is in for another very close gubernatorial race. Gov. Christine Gregoire (D) and challenger Dino Rossi (R) remain locked in
a fierce fight, with the incumbent leading 49% to 46%, within the survey's 3.9
percentage point margin of sampling error. Gregoire was elected to her first term in 2004 after three recounts determined she received 129 more votes than Rossi. Rrightwingnews.com Sunday, July 20, 2008The Wrecking Crew Coming soon: The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Rule by Thomas Frank, the author of the bestselling and must-read book, What's the Matter with Kansas?
In his previous book, Frank explained why working America votes for politicians who seem to favor the rich. Now, in his new book, Frank "examines the blundering and corrupt Washington those politicians have given us," according to the book jacket.
"Casting back to the early days of the conservative revolution, Frank describes the rise of a ruling coalition dedicated to dismantling government. But rather than cutting down the big government they claim to hate, conservatives have simply sold it off, deregulating some industries, defunding others, but always turning public policy into a private-sector bidding war. Washington itself has been remade into a golden landscape of super-wealthy suburbs and gleaming lobbyist headquarters--the wages of government-by-entrepreneurship practiced so outrageously by figures such as Jack Abramoff. Taegan Goddard's Political Wire Sunday, July 20, 2008Iraq Leader Praises Obama's Iraq Withdrawal Plan In an interview with Spiegel, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Barack obama's 16 month timeframe for a withdrawal from Iraq is the right one.
When asked when he thinks U.S. troops should leave Iraq, Maliki responded "as soon as possible, as far as we are concerned" noting that obama "talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes."However, the New York Times notes a spokesman for the Iraqi prime minister issued a statement saying
his remarks were "misunderstood and mistranslated," but did not address
a specific error.Marc Ambinder: "This puts John McCain in an extremely precarious spot: what's left to
argue? to argue against Maliki would be to predicate that Iraqi
sovereignty at this point means nothing." Taegan Goddard's Political Wire Sunday, July 20, 2008Quote of the Day "We know each other, we're friends, we're about the same age, we both have young kids, we both like sports, we made that trip to Iraq [in 2006]. You know, you get to know somebody when you're traveling in the belly of a C-130 or lifting off in a Blackhawk for somewhere like Fallujah or Kirkuk... We're the same generation, so we have a comfort level, but I don't want to overstate any of that. I like him, I hope he likes me."
-- Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN), in an interview with the National Journal, sounding very much like he wants to be considered as Sen. Barack obama's running mate. Taegan Goddard's Political Wire Sunday, July 20, 2008GOP Strategists Say Georgia Could Flip According to Robert Novak, GOP strategists "are privately conceding that the GOP could
lose Georgia's 15 presidential electors for the first time since 1992
because of Bob Barr's ballot position as the Libertarian Party
presidential candidate.""Third-pa... presidential candidates almost always run more poorly in
the actual election than their showing in the polls, but Barr, as a
former Republican congressman from Georgia, might sustain support in
his home state."Earlier on Political Insider: Will Barr put Georgia in play? Taegan Goddard's Political Wire Sunday, July 20, 2008 1 2 3 4 5 Archived "politics - Top Stories" opinions:
